# Step 1 Begin with the sixth (lowest and thickest) string. Tune it to E - the 12th white key to the left of middle C on the piano. Loosen or tighten the string a little at a time until the tones match. # Step 2 Place your finger behind the fifth fret of the sixth string. This step will give you the pitch of the fifth string, which is A. Tune the fifth string to match this note. # Step 3 Place your finger behind the fifth fret of the fifth string to get the pitch of the fourth string, which is D. Tune the fourth string to match this note. # Step 4 Place your finger behind the fifth fret of the fourth string to get the pitch of the third string, which is G. Tune the third string to match this note. # Step 5 Put your finger behind the fourth fret of the third string to get the pitch of the second string, which is B. Tune the second string to match this note. # Step 6 Place your finger behind the fifth fret of the second string to arrive at the pitch of the first string, which is E. Tune the first string to match this note. # Step 7 Touch the strings very lightly during the entire procedure; pressing hard will give you the wrong tone.

Just a tip that I've found useful: I keep an mp3 file of a low E on my mobile phone. That way I can retune my guitar after travelling if I need to.

If you have no piano then you have to do it by ear: Strings EADGBE top to bottom of the fret board. Start at the highest string E i.e. the bottom thinnest one. Tune to what you think is about the right sound. Press the B string at the 5th fret and tune E and B to the same sound by adjusting the B string. Press the G string at the 4th fret and tune it to the B string press the D string at nhe 5th fret and tune it to the G string Press the A string at the 5th fret and tune it to the D string Press the Lowest E string at the 5th fret and tune it to the A string. Repeat until all are correct. NOTE - as you tune the guitar the neck will bend and change the tuning so you may need to do this several times. The strings are now in tune relative to each other. If you play with others or records you need to get it in tune with them - For other instruments you can compare the sound - for records you need to buy either a set of pitch pipes (i can't use them) or an electronic tuning meter (much easier)
