Just go to a craft store and get a packet or two of "Plaster Of Paris". Follow the directions and you're done. It's not expensive.
Be aware that this stuff does generate heat when curing (similar to concrete). It is exothermic - meaning that it generates heat. Don't be tempted to make a mold of a body part, say; your hand - it can burn your skin.
Under normal circumstances it is quite safe and the heat produced is minimal.
Just in case you really want to try to make some, have a look at this wiki page;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plaster

Where it says to heat the gypsum at 150 degrees celcius, for how long depends on quantity of material. A bit of trial and error will be required. Also you must be able to get rid of the steam generated otherwise it will simply recombine with the gypsum. Ventilation and temperature control is the key.

So it can be done, but it's not really worth it unless you have no choice. The wiki page also gives you information on other forms of plasters. Interesting.
The technical info on the page is correct.
Yes, a  girl in England burned off all but two of her fingers  in a plaster of paris accident.
