You put a weight in the monkey fist?

Really any size can be used, you just use more wraps if it is narrower rope.

With a weight inside, monkey fists enabled sailors to throw the end of a rope to shore from a greater distance.

I always thought it was just a ball of rope; same descriptor, but adding the weight would make it a good flail to drag the line/club people :)

again, depends on the knot.

The monkeys fist can be anywhere from 2 wraps to 8+ wraps per layer, so the knot depends on the size of the rope.
For a 2inch ball, and say you wanted 3 layers, you probably want about 3/8 to 3/4 inch rope.

Check the related ibles,
find how to tie the monkey fist
Go to a hardware store that sells rope in bulk
try tying it on several different sizes
buy the stuff that fits.
