my friend has a old gun and i need to know what kind it is.

all i know about this gun is that it is bolt action, has iron sights and u can make them go from 50 yards to 300 yards. the most interesting thing is the safety has a loop on the back of the bolt action and u can put your finger in it and pull back, then twist, then let it slide back forward and that is how u take off the safety. it is wood and it looks like the clip will hold 5 shells. i do not know what shell it takes. thanks

Try schmit-rubin model 1889 straight pull bolt action 7.5 x 53.5mm swiss. google images or wikipedia.
Oh, and I'm not sure, but I don't think you are engaging and disengaging the safety, I think you are cocking and uncocking the bolt. Pull back to cock, twist and slide forward to uncock. Be careful.
Does it look like this? I'm still not sure about the safety/cocking mechanisms. Be careful.

Without either a picture or more info on the stampings, its nearly impossible to say with any degree of certainty. But, I'll make a W.A.G and say it could possibly be a pre-WWII Japanese Arisaka Type 30 rifle.
Google some images and see if that works.

I'm guessing no, but is there any chance of getting a picture?
