Sounds like a hardware problem, inside the iPod.  A single chip handles the line-out (through the dock) and headphone out (through the headphone port).  So if both are gone, it's likely the chip rather than the connectors.

Have you checked equalizer settings and stuff so see if anything funky is going on there?

I JUST CHECKED OUT ALL THE SETTINGS AND THEY ALL RESPOND. ON SCREEN AT LEAST. I GOT A LITTLE BURST OF SOUND FROM THE IPOD THROUGH THE EARPHONES BUT CANT REPEAT THAT. FRUSTRATING
A burst of sound, eh?  Have you tried a different pair of headphones?  Try turning off all the equalizer settings and sound check stuff.  Then, try your headphones at different volume levels.

Well I'm giving up. I managed to talk to several repair people and they tell me it's a logic board problem. The fix is more than I'm willing to pay. One repair guy will take it off my hands for 30 bucks so that's where it is going. thanks for the help.
Appreciate the replies.
be well
I might actually be interested as well.  I've got an iPod hack in the works that this would be perfect for.  Hey, if I'm successful I'll sell it back to you for twice the price.  ;)

Assuming you've checked volume levels, checked the manual to see if there's a mute feature, and checked that the track you're playing really does have audio... Sounds like a hardware failure.

If there's an Apple store near you, you could try asking one of their support staff to help you check it out.

YEAH IT MAY BE TIME TO GO PRO...I DID A COUPLE OF RESTORES ON IT AND TRIED DIFFERENT HEADPHONES NOTHING..NOTHING OUT OF THE DOCK EITHER BUT EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS.I HAVE SEARCHED ALOT OF FORUMS AND IT SEEMS TO BE A LOGIC BOARD ISSUE. I WONDER IF ITS WORTHWHILE TO TRY AND FIX IT MYSELF?
