Powdered laundry soap, a small amount of water, and an old broom for scrubbing...Rinse...Repeat if necessary. For heavy oil spill, Sawdust works well for soaking oil up but should be followed by laundry soap.

I've heard that powdered soap works better than kitty litter-it breaks up the oil not just absorbs it.

If the stain is on a tarmac driveway, you're pretty well scuppered, as the oil will have combined with the tar and become part of the driveway. Petrol or diesel fuel will dissolve oil, but will also dissolve the tar in tarmac, meaning that next time you sweep the drive, the gravel will come loose and leave a crater, so only use it on concrete or brick drives.

. Kitty litter, Oil-Dri®, dolomite, &c will get up a lot of it if you grind it in with your shoe. It doesn't do a great job, but will get rid of the excess stuff and allow any other cleaner you might use to do a better job. If you're not picky, it might be good enough.
. A high-pressure steam cleaner does a good job, especially if you can add soap.
