sealing cuts ends of timber

Have a section of a neighbour's oak tree that was taken down last year (fall).  Am storing it in our garage for 3 years before attempting to make a block out of it for a side table in the house.  Heard that the cut ends need to be sealed so the wood doesn't check and crack.  Is this correct and, if so, what kind of wax/sealant and where would I find this?

You can use latex paint to seal the ends of your log and thus keep the moisture inside the wood. Check the Ron Hazelton site for more information.

If you click the link and watch the video you will be able to see Mr. Hazelton applying latex paint to his milled lumber.
I use white wood glue.
