Less than the universe and more than an atom.
That would depend on what you consider average is for grains of sand since they come in many sizes.
Exactly, with man helping to classify and collect them into lots.
When does a pebble stop being a pebble to become a grain of sand.
In terms of particle size as used by geologists, sand particles range in diameter from 0.0625 mm (or 1⁄16 mm) to 2 mm. An individual particle in this range size is termed a sand grain.
So a pebble is a pebble over 2 mm.
Aparemtly although to be that's a big grain of sand.
I thought it was big also, but I did ask when a pebble stops being a pebble.
When it is in your shoe.
Don't matter what size it is, when it's in your shoe it's as big as a house.
When it starts being a rock.
Dude it's rock and roll.
Unless it was a stone to begin with. But then, Stones bring us right back around to It's Only Rock and Roll. Less than the universe and more than an atom.

I smell a homework task...
about 6.2×10−11(A medium grain of sand (0.5 mm diameter, 1.5 milligrams))
Finding the volume of a sand grain:
The formula for the volume of a sphere is:
V = (4π/3)R3, where R = radius of sphere. R = 0.25mm = 2.5 x 10-1mm = (2.5 x 10-1mm)(1m/103mm) = 2.5 x 10-4m.(4π/3)R3 ~= 4.18 x (2.5 x 10-4m)3 = 4.18 x (15.6 x 10-12m3 = 6.48 x 10-11m3.
sometimes I think I have far too much time on my hands.
Too much time on your hands? OK. Sure.
0m+19sWe are drifting in a great ocean of space and time.
1m+11sThese fine sand grains are all more or less uniform in size. They've been produced from bigger rocks through ages of jostling, and rubbing, abrasion and erosion, driven in part by the distant Moon and Sun....1m+56sA handful of sand contains about ten thousand grains, more than the total number of stars we can see with the naked eye, on a clear night. But the number of stars we can see is only the tiniest fraction of the number of stars that are. What we see at night is the merest smattering of the nearest stars, with a few more distant bright stars thrown in for good measure....2m+27sMeanwhile the Cosmos is rich beyond measure. The total number of stars in the Universe is larger than all the grains of sand on all the beaches on the planet Earth.
Barbados, California or Ben-My-Chree Beach on the Isle_of_Man sand ?
Came from google (of course) so I have NO idea what the parameters were. But I assume this is an idle question anyway.
I agree, especially for something that important to save the world....
Fun Question, followed by what is the volume of our star ?
The total volume of the sun is 1.4 x 1027 cubic meters. About 1.3 million Earths could fit inside the sun. The mass of the sun is 1.989 x 1030 kilograms, about 333,000 times the mass of the Earth.8 Aug 2012
