Your best bet is to just have a few things started, and when a new contest is announced jump on the project that best matches. However, there are a few contests that are pretty much guaranteed every year:
Valentine's Day
Hallowe'en
Christmas

Search I'bles "Forum Topics" for "contest coming". There are always announcements of upcoming contests, usually a week or so in advance.
No, you don't get special treatment. If you can't get your butt in gear when a contest is announced, the same way everyone else does, that's your problem. Suck it up and deal with it like an adult.
