I have the NXT personally, have been on the First Lego League competing, and have worked with the local middle school with theirs. I personally do not use mine all that much but it is a great introduction to very basic programming and as steve said is better than starting at the component level. It is essentially a expensive (for some) but good introduction to things like Arduino. At makerfaire I saw a booth where they had software that let you program Arduino the same way you program the lego robotics (using 'block programming') or you could switch to the code view. I would recommend it if you can afford it.

If it is within your budget, buy it.

Its a lot better way to start than from component level up.
