what is a brushless motor?

Effectively a powerful stepper motor - or more correctly a 3 or more phase motor.

Requires to be driven by an electronic circuit which provides the moving field required to make it rotate. Generally stationary coils and moving magnets.

DVD / CD drive motors are often brushless.
