what is a farad?

im just wondering if anyone can put it in terms that a less experienced person would understand what is a farad

Since you're asking what a farad is I'm sure you have a rough idea of what a capacitor is. Yes? A capacitor's storage potential, or capacitance, is measured in units called farads. You'll usually find Capacitors measured in milli (.001), micro (.000001), nano (.000000001), or pico (.000000000001) farads; although there are bigger capacitors (ultracapacitors) out there that measure in farads.
For more information wikipedia is a start but I wouldn't trust the reliability of the sites information. If I get infor from wikipedia I always cross check other references. I'd recommend Howstuffworks. Hope that helps.
