sometimes it's good to live in germany... here it would be a DIN 4B or 4C envelope, maybe adding a word if it has to have a hard back or for something rather thick (if i think correct about the size...) (Deutsche Industrie Norm sometimes is a wounderfull thing i'd probably miss in an other country) ;)

I think you may be speaking of a manila envelope.
I worked in Print for quite a while and I can promise you that there are at least a dozen names for the same or similar thing. If they are paper, they could be called manila envelopes, Kraft envelopes, brown envelopes, poster/artwork envelopes or any number of names. They could named for a standard number indicating size too. In the end, it's an envelope. No need to get technical.

If not a portfolio itself (as previously noted already), which are usually leather or a faux leather substitute, maybe you're using large manila envelopes?

(tough to guess from your description...)

They're called "portfolios," as Bardouv wrote.

A Google search for "art portfolio envelope" gave this company as one of the "sponsored hits."

I know nothing about them, but they have useful pictures of different kind of portfolios available.
