39% and climbing - renewable resources in Portugal.

In the UK, less than 5% of our electricity comes from "green", renewable resources.

In Portugal, they generate 39% of their power with renewables, and that is set to climb.

These red "snakes" - the Pelamis wave-power system - are built in the UK (but guess which government hasn't invested in them?), and Portugal is also investing heavily in wind, solar and hydro-electricity.

If one of the poorest countries in Europe can manage this, why can't the rest of us?

Aren't there wave thingys off Llandudno? I think I remember seeing something from the land... I think wave is one of the best methods to be used. :-)

If you can see them from the land, they're probably just buoys or floating barriers - Pelamis is an off-shore system.

Pelamis website
brief ''Marinet'' report on Pelamis

Pelamis extracts power from "rolling" waves off-shore. On-shore wave power needs decent-sized onshore waves with a lot of up-and-down motion.

The Limpet system from Wavegen has proven to be good for that.

I must remind you, whatever energy generation system proves to be "best", none of them can work alone - no single system or process can replace fossil fuels, but several carefully-coordinated systems can. Wave power seems to be one of the top contenders, though.

In the US, we were set to build some wave powered generators about 5 miles out to sea. The Kennedy's said no, because they didn't want to have to look at them. So all the plans were scrapped... Thats one of the reasons the rest of us can't. Stupid stuff like that.
