A tennis ball-chucker the dog can operate..

I had to post this one: a tennis ball-chucker for dogs, operated by dogs.

The dog loads it, and it fires automatically.

Ha, how long before the dog starts to put other things in the machine?

Like kittens
You evil man!
Here, kitty-kitty-kitty!

One of my nicknames at school, the one my pupils think I don't know about, is The Childcatcher.
I hope that there is no relationship between that nickname and the S.K. novel "Dreamcatcher" ;-)
It started after a school trip to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on stage in London.

Apparently the actor playing the Childcatcher looked like me.

The stage actor was much younger ...

hey, it's good to be compared to a younger person, right?
Kiteman w00ty328 years ago
A much younger serial kidnapper!
w00ty32 Kiteman8 years ago
hey, that's like comparing the dude who plays the part of the kidnapper, to an actual kidnapper. i wonder why if adults are stolen, they aren't adultnapped, they are still kidnapped.......
I'm a catnapper myself.
Ok, that is much less of a threat then the reference I came up with LOL
Oh wow. Care to explain that one? ;]
I have a skill - I always seem to be just where the more "creative" students are about to do something. I can always find something they've done wrong.

They're too young to know about the KGB

dude I have a normal sized Golden Retriever and this would scare the S*IT out of her. Dude even if I Put a cereal box near her she runs away
AWESOME! I really wish I had one of these; I have to throw balls at my brother to help him practice cricket and it gets *really* repetitive. Where'd you get it/how did you make it?

Sorry--I didn't build this, just posted the video. Sure would be a great project, though....

it is a bit of overkill though. I do believe it could be done simpler.

I'm sure you're right--an opposing-wheel type launcher, like the pitching machines, perhaps?

Still, it's hard to beat the over-engineered complexity of it for the wow-factor. In the spirit, if not the style, of steampunk.

Plus it tracks the # of launches, times of day, etc. Nothing like checking up on the dog's playtime activity while you're at work.. ;-)
Goodhart gmoon8 years ago
Well, it looks like they need to use it more often, that Dachshund was a wee bit pudgy LOL
gmoon (author)  Goodhart8 years ago
Yeah, he's not a young dog, either. What I love about these videos--the dogs always take their cues from the launchers to get the maximum "chase factor..."
Goodhart gmoon8 years ago
Yeah, I wondered about that. I watched it several times and was looking / listening for the "queue" that sent him running. It seemed to occur "just" before the ball was launched, so he would see where it went and would be "right behind it" like you said.

Maybe I am just a little overprotective, but is there a safety mechanism on that launcher so when it comes down it doesn't crush that child's feet and hands, or the dog? In the video, the little boy's foot went right in between the mechanism for a minute.
"I built the ball machine because I thought my dog Jerry, might like it and that it would be something fun for me to build. So after two years of on and off work, with many safety features such as IR proximity sensors to protect Jerry and my son from the machine, I finally complete. " -Zedomax (link)

P.S. I was quoting from the linked page, where the builder is quoted regarding safety features.

I thought I had seen something like this before.....

The first one of these, doesn't look as hard to build...

. That's great. My AU Cattle Dog would LOVE something like that.
I rescued two ACDs (from the same litter)... I was thinking the exact same thing.
That's so cool! Where can I make one? :P
In your garage, probably? :P

That is great! What a cute/smart little doggie! That little tail is going! And he knows the sound of when to run! Very nice, thanks for posting this!

I want one! (i don't have a dog, i want it for myself!) That kid looks like an insane evil genius type. Watch out when he gets older. LOL
extend the hose for the tennis ball and play catch with yourself :P
does the dog ever stop? do you hear it in the middle of the night?
