Ace advertising has got to go

The Ace advertising has got to go.  every time you change pages....and with a timer?  Come on!  Cut my visit to Instructables short today because of them.  Not a happy camper.

Thanks for letting us know. Our advertisers sometimes launch things like this which is beyond what was agreed upon, we're fixing it as we speak!
If you are seeing the ACE Advertisement and have a complaint, read the comment from mikeasaurus first please! :-)
I have had similar issues when viewing the page on an older MacBook. Until the ad loads, I am dead in the water. And often, this ad refuses to cloe, which prevents further navigation of the Instructables website. Only the ACE ads have had this effect (including the lame: "How often will you visit us?" Poll).
Hmmm, that's not good. I can't replicate those results at the moment, but we're looking into it.

Turn pro, and you get a lot fewer adverts. I have never seen this "Ace" advert of which you speak.

If you cannot afford pro, create a cool project, and get a free pro membership for being featured.

If you can't manage that, install an adblocker.

Kiteman for the last 3 or 4 years I have enjoyed just lurking and have been very happy watching the ads. This is obtrusive and over the line. When I open a page my screen is held hostage for 5-8 seconds until the timer counts down. Once I finish that page and go to the next step, the same ad pops up and I have to wait for the timer.

Advertising like this really turns me off and right now I wouldn't go into an Ace Hardware store if they were giving away free stuff. I am sorry but if it continues, Instructables will lose me because it's no fun at all. There are too many other sites I can be spending time on.
You note that the ad is gone now.

As far as I know, HQ has set conditions on the kind of ads allowed on the site, including that they do not harm reader interaction or enjoyment of the site, such as pop-ups that cover what you want to read, or very loud adverts that play automatically.

An advert that actually stops the page and forces you to read it, as you describe, would also be a contravention of that condition, so I think you can take the credit for highlighting the problem to HQ, and having the ad removed.

Thank you.

Would you consider re-posting this at the top level, so that Mikeasaurus and the other staff are more likely to notice it?
Sorry...Don't actually know what "re-posting this at top level" means. Can you clarify?
Oh, sorry. I meant that instead of (or here, in addition to) using the [Reply] button on the previous user's comment, you might also click the Add Comment link, and copy-and-paste your text into that new comment, which will show up as a new top-level comment here.
Understood, and copied!
It is NOT gone. I just got it again.
It was gone (note the post dates), but it came back.

That is bad, but being sorted.
+1

Advertising is a necessary evil in funding a site like this, and going PRO is the solution, because as a Pro Member, you won't see even half of the advertisements (including the Ace Ad).

I have no problem with advertising, but this is going too far. Every time you refresh or change pages, your screen is held hostage until the timer counts down. After every page change, for me that's a nogo. It ruins the experience of surfing the site.

The advertising in the past has not been an issue for me. This is!
Can you post a screenshot that shows the Ace Ad you're referring to?

I just opened another browser (where I was not logged in, so I was like a non-Pro Member), and surfed a number of Instructables, forum topics, the Q & A section and the home page, and didn't see any Ace Ad's or the timer issue you're referring to. So... I'm a little confused as to what you are seeing; but a screenshot might help.

The ace Ads appear to have been removed, not showing up anymore. They were a popover add that popped up covering most of the screen. While displayed, I couldn't close or exit the page till the timer counted down. These things popped over every time you opened a new page.

Good news they are no longer showing up.
Okay, I can see how that would be considered excessive if not just plain annoying. The good thing is they are no longer there, and since you appear to have just gone pro, you should notice a lot LESS advertisements in general. I never saw the Ace Ad, and I would imagine that no Pro Members would, so you should be okay now. Hopefully they've reconsidered that advertising approach for a less intrusive one for all members. ;-)
Advertising is a necessary evil. Disruptive advertising that destroys the user experience is optional.

Please please please get rid of the ACE roll-over advertisement. The ad includes a note that says "roll over for more info" but that notice or warning is outside the regular viewing margin.

Yes, I listened to the ad. Yes, I think Ace Hardware is just swell. But please do NOT boobie trap instructables.com pages!

Instructables.com is my most forwarded page. It unites and cross-pollinates newbies with veterans, engineers with artists, techies with hippies. Keep it up!

Mikeasaurus' reply button is broke now or it got covered up by the ad?
It's not broken -- his comment has been "featured" (i.e., made sticky), which has the side effect of prohibiting replies. This is not a bug, as it prevents trolls and SPAMmers from hijacking comments at the top of a forum topic.
Mikeasaurus's comment was not featured at the time of my reply thus causing the concern that he did not reply directly to two other commenters reporting the bug which also prompted Kiteman to relay the message. But hey, I guess that is how Autodeskibles does it's customer service, what do I know?
lol
I see it, but I've got an adblocker running.
Thank you for your reply AND for your great service.
Agreed that that ACE ads are over the top. While I do plan on contributing with a pro-membership, at this point, I cannot afford to do so. I will admit that some of the Radio Shack ads have given me ideas, and provided reources for products I could not otherwise purchase locally. ACE does not no that. Their ads are annoying, and they don't offer anything to budding hobbyists that other local companies cannot provide (at a comperable price, BTW).

Pro-membership is out of the hands of many contributors and users here. Ads help fund the forum that we all adore. I don't even mind them. But ACE doesn't add anything.

I don't mind the fact that the ace ads exist, it the repetitive loud, video popup adverts that are killing me.

Requiring only a mouseover javascript event to trigger a new popup.
This is like the bad old days of the internet, before we figured out how to turn off pop-over and pop-unders using the new browser options.
I mean, even a lot of the scammy porn sites and fake anti-virus groups are more subtle than this.

the worst part, for me at least, is that the "close" button, at my resolution, and screen position, is RIGHT OVER THE AD. so it sets up an endless loop of video popups!
At the very least, downgrade the aggressive advertising to requiring a click, before launching obtrusive popup video advertising(I felt a great disturbance in the Net, as if millions of dial-up modems suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened)
Agreed. The Ace pop-up is simply *TOO* annoying. Almost enough to drive me away from this site. Or use a an ad-blocker.

It appears that the popover Ace ads are gone for now and that is good news. To be clear, I have no problem seeing the ads, but advertisers and sites that step over the line like this was lose me forever.

I've had Instructables on my favorites bar for over 5 years.

I'm removing it unless this new Ad goes away. It's taking advertising too far.
