Awesome Idea for a Hack but need LCD know how.

Hello there Everyone! I am trying to Do a project where I can use Small LCD screens (perferably a CVS disposable camera 1.4" TFT screen) The problem is I'm not quite sure how to go about hooking them up to a RCA, or S-video input. My whole project hinges upon me getting a good LCD or OLED monitor as they need to be fairly high quality. I cannot seem to find many small LCD or OLED suppliers out there so I am hoping this can be done with the disposible. I would also like to ask if anyone does have information on where to buy small, detailed LCDs that can receive RCA. I considered using a cell phone screen but it seems that you need to break down an analog RCA input and digitize it to be viewed on the screen, something that needs a beefy micro controller and programing knowhow, of which i have neither. Please lend a hand, and you may see my first instructable, of something rather awesome.

This was a case of the novice thinking his the possibilities were limitless and now the intermediate knowing that the problems are limitless..

iv a prity good idea as to what your making john, i realise this tread is years old but can you tell me how you got on with this project ? im doing something almost the exact same and am running into similar problems as you .

It never came to. I was essentially trying to create what is now known as the Oculus Rift. I had been playing with spectroscopy for many years and thought it was what was missing from virtual reality. My idea was to feed 2 different video sources into the screens. it seems the best way to do this is play splitscreen on one large display.

ah, it seems we havent the same plans after all, im thinking of making a nightvison scope and plan housing it inside some 2" PVC tubing. tho i think i may have found a solution to my screen, theres lots of mini pocket tv's on ebay at the moment ( useless now because the end of analog signal ) for pennies and the screens are almost perfect tho a tiny bit big, anything from 2" -2.5" .
i think what you and i had in mind with regard to connecting a analog camera to a digital display is the holy grail of hacks and is extremely difficult to pull off.

The only way I can see this happening is by taking a circuit that already does this. Your best bet is to buy a used PEV (Personal Entertainment Viewer) that has a broken ear piece (basically anything but the screens and controller/inverter board can be broken). I bought two MYVU Solo Plus and tore them apart. They are micro screens that use small lenses to magnify them. If you take the board out of the second unit and disconnect the video and power connection from one display (in the first unit) then hook up the second inverter board to the other screen (in the first unit) you would then have two displays powered by the same battery. Each screen would have its own RCA input though. I completely tour them down so I could fit them into my Stormtrooper helmet that I made. (its a pretty epic costume that I'm wearing for Halloween this year) I then used two pinhole cameras with RCA outputs and attached them inside the helmet and drilled holes so that the camera could see out of the helmet. I used these to extend my peripheral vision (I even put in IR LED lights and removed the IR filter from the cameras so i could see at night). Hope this helps!

P.S. The vision sucks inside those helmets because of the distorted lenses ^_^

Why not skip the LCD screen and hack an old camcorder viewfinder?

it seems that I need someone who knows about converting analog video signal to digital. All I have found so far is that any small screen needs digital input. Does anyone out there know where I can find information on this? I'm clueless now LOL

hmmm well would it be possible to hook up the smaller LCD from the CVS camera to the portable LCD or would it need to be totally re-wired. The absolute largest I can go is 2" and it needs to be fairly good quality.

car backup camera If anyone can reverse engineer these cameras. Still not cheap though.

Maybe an old 2nd generation ipod nano screen? I don't know if that can be hacked to receive signal

You would have to hack your signal to feed the wireless security cam monitor or just plug it into the portable TV. You would have to search for smaller screens if that is what you had in mind. I hope this helps.
