Canon battery charger (images updated)

Greeting all, I have this canon camera that I dearly love. My sd100 may be a bit older and dated by today's 7 megapixel standards, but I don't buy that marketing propaganda anyway. So here's the deal: Canon cameras come with this cool little charger with flip out prongs to tap into the 110v lines in your home. This doesn't work for me as I am in the car more often than not and have a USB power plug for charging my phone and also for my Mio GPS. How can I begin to reverse engineer this thing to accept 5v usb power? Sorry I am more of a tinkerer than a engineer and any help would be appreciated. Maybe we can make a database of these charger mods? I know a few people that would appreciate something similar. Thanks in advance!

. I think the DC input to the secondary side is the two top pins on what I think is a rectifier. The thing with four pads to the right of the blue cap to the right of the transformer - the thing that sits over the slash in the PCB. Measure the voltage/polarity at those two pins.

Hi all im new here, just wanted to add my thoughts. Looking at that charger theres a bit more than just some diodes and resistors. Theres looks to be an IC, which I reckon will monitor the state of the battery, current flow and voltage. Probabaly allowing the charger to stop charging when battery is full and to charge it as quickly as possible without daming battery. It may be possible to make this run off 12V but its most likely going to take a good bit of modification, I'd stick with the invertor idea :)

There is no chance of reverse engineering it, even to run on the 12 v coming out of your car (no chance of 5v, you need that much just to run the charging circuit at least, let alone an actualy trickle charge to the batteries). You'd be better off buying a cheapy 75 watt inverter and using that with it. Sorry bout your luck, but that's all you can do, I've never seen an actual car battery charger.

There must be a way! it's a battery, and it can be recharged! Found this item elsewhere:
. If you can get the thing open without destroying it, measure the voltage coming out of the transformer/rectifier or the input of the battery charger circuit and go from there. If it's 12V, just tap that spot and connect to a male cig lighter plug. If it's 5V, get a 5V regulator (7805?). Etc

Notice how the charger board is labeled secondary and primary? Excuse my ignorance, but which side would I test voltage on?
. The primary side will be the 120VAC input and the secondary will be the DC to the batteries. . The part marked BC2004CN is the transformer and the small, black, four-legged chip to its' right is the rectifier. . You want to measure the voltage at the demarcation line. Should only be 2-3 wires/traces crossing.
. Don't forget a fuse. ;)
Uhhh..jeeze I dunno man. Batteries are ment to be trickle charged.

If there's a transformer in the charger and if it supplies around 13.5 to 15 volts, you can remove it along with the rectifier(s) and feed the automobile's 12v directly. Most likely, it uses nothing more than diodes, drop-down resistors and paired LEDs and resistors to match the battery's charged resistance and an indicator that the batteries are charged.
