I've never had an actual contract (I'm pay-as-you-go), but (judging by the adverts I see for switching providers), contract cancellation is free (but you have to pay for the handset).

I think it should be abolished completely. The most of the people who want out of the cell phone contracts are people who can't pay for it. What then?

I heard about this today. But they only allow it within the first thirty days, or ten days after the first bill, so, if two months later, you realize that AT&T is crap, then you're screwed.
