Changes in instructables over time

what changes have you noticed in your time visiting this site? One that stands out to me, is the increase in k'nex instructables, and the decrease in explosive, and weaponry ones. Cause the weaponry (tazer glove that is) is what brought me to this site.

The forums were here when I joined (last February), but no one seemed to use them much yet. Now the forums are as popular, if not more so, than the Instructables themselves.

There have also been MANY changes to the site layout since I got here. Are there any screenshots of older versions floating around someone's computer? The look evolved, and I can't even recall what it looked like. A much different home page, but that's it.

Oh, and most of the iBles were placed in the Make Group. I actually found Instructables by clicking the link on the Make magazine page, and was confined to that group for a few weeks until I realized there was more to the site.

That's weird, that is exactly what happened to me, I thought the site was only make projects, it took about 3 weeks to realise there was more to it.

Growth.

Although there are relatively few continuously-active members, we are huge. There are "over 100,000" recipients of the newsletter (I bet that number is larger now), and over 2 million unique hits per month.

We turn up in the non-web media enough to convince me that this site is not only a major force in the Maker culture, but is starting to influence others to join it (that's what happened to me - I was after information on a specific, one-off project, and looki what happened to me!).

We are, I believe, a force for Good in this world. Subtle, non-campaigning, but still steering the web-accessing population towards a less-damaging lifestyle.

What I have not seen, and this pleasantly surprises me, is a rise in repeated projects. There have been a few notable exceptions, but even the K'Nex guns seem to be an evolution of a theme, rather than a repetition. I saw one recently where no part of the gun was actually the poster's own work, but that particular combination of others' work was wholly original (and the poster had credited the sources of his parts).

I can't believe I just used K'Nex as an example fo the site's growth.
Oh yea, you really hit it on the head there. It is awesome how many people are adding to this site, and contributing their creations/hacks/mods/etc for the whole world to read and simulate.

I mean seriously...being featured on NPR? Just one awesome indicator of the impact that Instructables has. I love it.

As George S. Patton Jr. once said, "If everybody is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking."

I have been here since last January, and there have been some awesome changes. Actually, if you just visit the Instructables Blog, you can see the documentation of most of the changes.

I really like to homepage change. Before, it was just a big image with looping images of different instructables below. Now, the front page gets (from my knowledge), 20,000 views a day. The featured instructables are great, along with the new algorithm for popular instructables.

I like the featured forum topics, that makes gives users a good read. There has been the UserCP changes, toolbar changes, and most recently there has been the awesome new layout for contests.

I can't wait for this coming year's new changes. Possible chat room, who knows! I am excited!
more people, more advertisers, more smart people, more dumb people, more knex, less computer stuff, more spam, less of a small little community (like the one where you know everyone), but more variety in opinions. also theres more "green" stuff, and more childish things.
all I noticed was that no one builds cool mechanical things much thats not a change but it is something I would like to see more of.
