Chronological order for comments

How can I get comments to display in chronological order. They are completely random now, and I see no faqs on this.

sort by: active | newest | oldest

You've probably already figured this out in the past year (or you don't care any more). The comments aren't "completely random." Look at the line just above the first comment shown, and you'll see sort by: active | newest | oldest The first option does what Rishnai described exactly eight months ago -- the comment with the most recent response anywhere down the tree appears first, and so on. The second option gives you reverse-chronological order for the top-level comments (all threads are preserved in order of creation), while the third option gives you direct-chronological order.

A year and a half later, and I realize the answer lies in your second reply, " I agree with you that they don't exist on I'bles, but they should." All I was looking to do was sort the comments on the instructable itself, not the forum comments. I guess I'll just read them all.

I, too, would like to see all comments starting with oldest at the top and ending with newest at the bottom. I suggest that this be made an option that can be set in the "customize" section of our accounts.

Congratulations on bumping this topic exactly one year after it was posted!

Any forum topic with more than one page worth of comments already has this option. Look at the line just above the first comment shown, and you'll see

sort by: active | newest | oldest

I didn't realize this was a year old, and I did finally figure out that a comment seems to start its own thread only if it is directly replied to. I don't read enough discussion groups to be familiar with this style, so it took a while to make sense of it. I still do not find the "sort by:" option. I am looking at https://www.instructables.com/id/Pie-in-a-Jar/?&sort=NEWEST&limit=50 and it has 85 comments, apparently on two pages, but no sort option. Am I missing something?

No, you aren't missing something. That smells to me like a bug, or at least a "not implemented feature" :-( If you look at forum topics, you'll see the "sort by:" options that I mentioned. I agree with you that they don't exist on I'bles, but they should.

Would you be willing to create a bug report bug report on this issue? Be specific about the fact that the "sort by" is missing from I'bles, but is present on forum topics.

As a workaround, you can see the qualifiers which are part of the URL you posted. You should be able to change NEWEST to ACTIVE or OLDEST (and change the limit number) by manually editing the URL in your browser.

As far as I can see at this point, comments display by most recent posting. Also, even if the original comment at the top of a reply tree is 65 million years old, if there is a reply to the comment (or a repy to any of the replies), that bumps the entire tree to the top.
