One thing that comes to mind is the idiotarod, happening in late january:

It's like the Iditarod in Alaska but with a shopping cart and idiots instead of a sled and an eskimo.

I participated in it last year, I imagine we could make a pretty tricked out shopping cart. One team (cobra team pictured) had a flame throwing cart last year.
