Coming soon: USB Contest

Within the next couple weeks we will be starting a USB Contest!

The rules are that the entry needs to involve USB in some way. It can be powered via USB, transfer data via USB, or even provide power by USB. As long as there is some USB connection being used, it can be entered.

So keep that in mind and start noodling some ideas. Just be sure not to post until the contest starts, OK?

More details to come.

Damn, I got a few ideas and I got to go back to college in a few days... :(
May 31, 2010. 3:15 AMscarabeetle101 says:
Does it have to be an electronic thing or can it just be a physical modification of an existing device?
May 27, 2010. 8:26 AMNerdz says:
What if the project involves just the USB connectors and doesnt connect to a actual PC or use a USB interface? Does that still count?
May 27, 2010. 1:13 PMimshanedulong says:
I'm pretty sure it will.

BTW, Thanks for representin' and putting nerd in your username! NERD PRIDE!!

Would something like this: circuitgizmos.com/wordpress/
circuitgizmos.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/mounted.jpg
count? In other words can it be rewritten as an instructable and then count for the contest?

hey guys, im fairly certain that the winning instructable will be one of two things :
1: arduino powered
2: uses flash memory
May 30, 2010. 1:17 AMuberdum05 says:
not being nasty to you all, but why would you put up your ideas, I know you might think people will use them for ideas. but there will be somebody who will copy your design :) (just being friendly)
May 30, 2010. 11:38 AMdagenius says:
I think the people who post their ideas in the comments don't want, or don't have the resources to make their ideas come to life. So if they get lucky, someone might use their idea, and they would be proud that it was their idea initially.

How about flower vase? each flower is one of usb port which light up or blink by led

Or may be, we can redesign usb division like as building....
May 24, 2010. 5:27 PMramiram5 says:
 Do floppy disks count????
May 24, 2010. 9:56 PMNachoMahma says:
.  As long as they have working USB ports.
May 24, 2010. 9:07 PMkelseymh says:
No.  Why would you think so?
May 25, 2010. 8:47 PMquesoman says:
Does the entry have to involve a physical USB jump drive or can it use a USB cord?

I love the idea. I hear many excelent ideas brewing up.
May 26, 2010. 3:27 AMGrey_Wolfe says:
Doesn't have to be a drive, just has to have a functional USB connection (male or female).
May 25, 2010. 9:13 PMratgod says:
Pitty I can't entry my cheap USB plug again :P
http://www.instructables.com/id/Custom-and-cheap-USB-A-plug/
but I've a nice idea involving the HP personal media drive bay brewing up :)

Awesome, don't have anything in mind yet, but haven't posted an 'ble in a while...
May 23, 2010. 7:53 AMjollex says:
Does it have to be posted after the contest starts because I just posted my knex USB yesterday...
May 24, 2010. 2:27 PMkelseymh says:
So make another one, this time cleaning up all the glue blobs and making flatter edges :-)
May 23, 2010. 9:18 AMMichelMoermans says:
Yep it does..

In all contests except the halloween contest all entries must be submitted after the start of the contest.

They do this because they want to attract new ibles. If they would allow already excisting ibles this would mean that no new ibles would be created and users could enter many contests with the same ible

Is the yellow part of the image significant?  It looks almost like a corporate logo...

May 23, 2010. 7:56 PMdarthstupie says:
It looks kinda like a Trans-Am logo.
May 21, 2010. 8:39 PMNachoMahma says:
.  Maybe a corporate sponsor?
May 24, 2010. 2:53 PMMadBricoleur says:
OOOH You know how fantastically AWESOME it would if THAT sponsor provided the prizes. MmmmHMM!!
May 24, 2010. 3:06 PMNachoMahma says:
.  I like that idea!
.  I like macgeek800's prize even better. ;)
May 26, 2010. 3:28 AMGrey_Wolfe says:
I'll take two... I'm sure the wife won't mind.
May 24, 2010. 5:06 PMMadBricoleur says:
lol :P
May 24, 2010. 2:28 PMkelseymh says:
Hmmmm...USB jack in the barrel (cosmetic), or maybe a USB controlled trigger release (operational)?
May 21, 2010. 11:48 PMKiteman says:
Maybe an extra prize for the quickest-loading software?

May 23, 2010. 4:43 PMfruitkid101 says:

going to start fiddling with ideas and see what i come up with
May 23, 2010. 5:32 AMjeff-o says:
Quick question:  Is it enough that it's simply programmed by USB then disconnected (like an Arduino), or does the device need a constant connection to USB?
May 22, 2010. 8:38 PMfearme36 says:
Awesome! Now I can start to work on my USB powered boat! If only I could get my computer closer to a bathtub...
May 21, 2010. 2:13 PMNachoMahma says:
.  heehee  I see a lot of fried USB ports on the horizon.
May 22, 2010. 7:11 PMtechnoguy94 says:
You could just make a battery-powered USB device charger, if all you need is power. Then it really doesn't matter if you fry it.
May 21, 2010. 9:01 PMzack247 says:
with many usb experiments of mine, i have had the message "power surge on usb port 2" too many times.
May 21, 2010. 3:28 PMcanida says:
Mmmm, tasty fried USB!

Wait.
May 23, 2010. 12:57 PM=SMART= says:

And fried circuits is the smell of a $20 microcontroller going to the waste.

May 21, 2010. 6:09 PMKryptonite says:
I was going to say $50... :D
May 22, 2010. 8:53 PMGeekmandude says:
Or $9.95 if you got an Ardweeny! :)
May 23, 2010. 12:43 AMKryptonite says:
Still a shame if you break it.
May 22, 2010. 7:50 AMM4industries says:
If you got ripped off for an Arduino!
May 23, 2010. 12:43 AMKryptonite says:
Arduiono's not the only thing on the market.
May 22, 2010. 2:12 PMAndyGadget says:
At Last!  There's something I built a while ago - a few of them actually - and I've been waiting for a suitably themed contest to give me the impetus to write an Instructable.  A USB contest will do nicely. It's simple but it's a goodie!
(Fingers crossed for 'international entries accepted'.)

May 21, 2010. 10:16 PMph1lt3ch says:
Ooh ooh, an idea for you, web based interface for controlling/lighting your grill > connected via USB hahaha
May 21, 2010. 10:14 PMph1lt3ch says:
Dear lord that would draw a lot of amps....Multiple ports??? hahaha
May 22, 2010. 10:56 AMzack247 says:
first i'll need to figure out how to make a decent heating coil that can run off of 5-10 volts, so maybe... i think i'll give it a shot.
May 25, 2010. 1:47 AMkillerjackalope says:
Not enough wattage there for a barbeque but you could make a single hot dog oven...
May 25, 2010. 1:08 PMzack247 says:
could you pm me with some help?
May 25, 2010. 2:51 PMkillerjackalope says:
No problem, if you've got a good plan for one but are missing things I wouldn't mind collaborating on it, I haven't done a usb powered heating device before but it'll be much the same... Pm with what you've got so far and I'll try and help, I have a few of my own projects for this so I'm not too worried...

May 21, 2010. 8:59 PMzack247 says:
5.2 volts, a usb port is 5. i had to repair the buttons on one, so i guess i know more than i need to know
May 21, 2010. 6:13 PMKryptonite says:
