Contest Voting Change

We have revisited our contest rules and decided that we had made a mistake in making community voting not be a factor in our decision-making process. As a result, we are reverting back to our previous rules, and picking half of the finalists based upon community voting.

This change has already gone into effect for all contests that are currently running. It is rare that we change the rules of a contest while it is running, but we feel that this change should prove beneficial to all.

This change is part of our ongoing commitment to do what is best for the members of this website.

I must have been out of the loop, how was it done before?

Thanks. I didn't know it had switched over to judge-only voting for a while.
poofrabbit in reply to jeff-oMay 25, 2012. 6:17 PM
I also hadn't realized it changed until I saw this. I imagine it's a hard thing to do, when trying to be fair to all entries. My only thought would be that entries were hidden until voting started, not the best of ideas but it might help. I get enjoyment out of entering, I might fall over dead if one day I win, but no matter what the instuctable gods decided, I will always enter :)
Kiteman in reply to jeff-oMay 22, 2012. 1:35 PM
Don't worry, I hadn't, either. :-/
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanMay 22, 2012. 2:52 PM
It would have made more sense (at that time) to have removed the vote buttons. It did give the impression that they counted, but in the rules they had noted that it didn't count for anything.

I am glad to see that they are using votes again. I didn't really understand how a project that I voted for (not mine btw), that had a good number of views, and was a finalist lost to other ibles that had less views and IMO, were not as good. So maybe the voting aspect will help.
Kiteman in reply to canucksgirlMay 22, 2012. 3:15 PM
Agreed.

I thought it was muddily-worded legalese, and I am a bit annoyed that the change was not made more public when it happened.
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanMay 22, 2012. 3:19 PM
Well I'll give them props for announcing it now and admitting a mistake was made... (they could have just switched back over and said nothing, and perhaps many people would have been none the wiser).
Kiteman in reply to canucksgirlMay 22, 2012. 3:58 PM
True.

My, aren't we chipper this morning?

(It's 1am over here, I can't sleep)
Lithium Rain in reply to KitemanMay 22, 2012. 7:41 PM
Mmm, bemused might describe it. (Hope you finally got to sleep!)
Kiteman in reply to Lithium RainMay 23, 2012. 12:11 PM
I did, eventually. Conker-X is in hospital - his kidneys are playing up again.
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanMay 23, 2012. 3:14 PM
OMG! That's terrible. I hope everything is going to be okay?
Kiteman in reply to canucksgirlMay 23, 2012. 3:41 PM
It should be - he's had kidney stones all his life, they just flared up more than usual, caused an infected cyst that needs dealing with.

Should know more in 12-24 hours.
Lithium Rain in reply to KitemanMay 25, 2012. 1:42 PM
:-( Any word yet? I'm really sorry to hear that.
Kiteman in reply to Lithium RainMay 25, 2012. 9:36 AM
He's fine "in himself", as they say, but he has a lump on his back that needs investigating. Local hospital thought it was a cyst on his kidney, but his usual hospital say it's not, and needs more scans.

We'll see, but we're not being pessimistic about it.

Caitlinsdad,

omg.... literally laughing out loud and my eyes are watering. ;-)

I LOVE the red sign on the curtain. YOU ROCK! and you made my day!

Kiteman, I hope everything is going well with Conker-X. Wishing nothing but the best and a speedy return home!
Kiteman in reply to canucksgirlMay 26, 2012. 12:17 PM
He's home now, feeling fine, but bruised.
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanMay 26, 2012. 2:46 PM
That's great. I'm glad he's back home. ;-)
Kiteman in reply to canucksgirlMay 27, 2012. 6:48 AM
Hehe, so are we!
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanMay 23, 2012. 3:55 PM
Oye... That's a shame. Kids shouldn't have to go through things like that. (Plus I understand they can be rather painful).

Thinking positive thoughts for you all. ;)

Instead of counting sheep, you could paper craft some sheep?

Judges are chosen from a pool of Instructables members, as well as Instructables staff and contest sponsors.
tigerbomb8 says: May 22, 2012. 9:28 AM
people should not be able to vote until the end of the contest
fungus amungus in reply to tigerbomb8May 23, 2012. 9:57 AM
We had that until a few months ago. The problem with that is that people often voted on an Instructable when they were reading it and wanted to give it a boost. As a result, many of the vote leaders were entries that were entered late and got a lot of traffic. Early entries with lots of traffic and positive ratings/comments would be forgotten by this point.
jeff-o in reply to tigerbomb8May 22, 2012. 1:11 PM
Yeah, I had mixed feelings about that, too. In terms of gathering votes, early entries clearly have a bit of an advantage.

But on the other hand, it also means that the Voting Members can go ahead and vote for a winner when the Instructable is fresh, rather than having to go back two months later and try to remember which projects they liked (if they bother going back at all!)
dustinandrews says: May 22, 2012. 8:20 AM
Voting should be a factor, but I worry that people who are good at social media will get votes they may or may not deserve. It's a hard problem, glad to see only half the finalists are decided that way.
randofo (author) in reply to dustinandrewsMay 23, 2012. 9:48 AM
Only half of the finalists are chosen by voting. The other half are decided by editors. The winner is still chosen from Judging
