Contingency Plan

As part of my disaster readiness planning, I have given the scenario of a global economic meltdown much consideration. To this end I have compiled a thorough step-by-step contingency plan. I am happy to now be able to make this guide actionable and will be sharing all of this information as an Instructable shortly. How about you? Have you done any preparation? Have you given the matter any forethought?

...making money like that is quite common, and it really can screw up the economy if somebody pulls out of a certain country. Meh, atleast you get some cheap money out of it.

I have some great kitchen tips on baking with children. They taste excellent. So tender.
Oct 16, 2008. 9:29 PMKryptonite says:
Hehe, roast children, with fingers for dessert. Well u did say cooking with children!
Oct 17, 2008. 8:16 AMnerdologist says:
That's what I implied. Read _A Modest Proposal_ by Jonathan Swift if you haven't already. :)
Oct 24, 2008. 12:44 AMKryptonite says:
...whoah, thats amazing cuz i thought u just had ur wording slightly mixed up and made a joke. then I worked out that you had already implied what I had made a joke of. Seeing this, I threw myself off a cliff, caught myself before I was brutally killed and then proceeded to eat myself starting at the stomach before I worked out the food would just fall out every where, having nowhere to go. BTW the modest proposal was a good proposal.
Oct 24, 2008. 8:48 AMnerdologist says:
I wasn't trying to inflict social anxiety on you. I was excited that somebody understood my humor. So where is this cliff? I think I will collect your remains for a stew that I have been planning...

I don't know......green stew ?

"Whatchagot Stew"
Oct 24, 2008. 9:39 PMGoodhart says:
Kryptonite, at least in the Superman series, was green.....nerdologist was going to collect Kryptonite's remains and make stew..... ;-)
Oct 24, 2008. 9:46 PMskunkbait says:
Oh, I get it. But "Whatchagot" still applies. When you don't have "real" stew ingredients, you go with what you've got (whatchagot). I think leftover Kryptonite would go nicely with... let's see...(looks in cupboard)... sardines, pork n' beans, two lifesavers, and dandelion greens.
Oct 24, 2008. 9:53 PMGoodhart says:
Hmm, leave out the kryptonite, and the lifesavers, and you have a real nice stew there :-)
Oct 24, 2008. 9:55 PMskunkbait says:
Nope, you gotta go with what ya got!
Oct 24, 2008. 9:59 PMGoodhart says:
They were what you mentioned....you don't have to put everything you own into the stew LOL
Oct 26, 2008. 2:06 AMKryptonite says:
Why have I become the subject of a thread in a comment about the economy crashing, and being talked about to be put in a STEW!?!?! Hmm, when you're done cooking can you let me try some of myself? And you leave those lifesavers alone! They're mine!
Oct 26, 2008. 12:48 PMGoodhart says:
something about the branch of the thread where you toss yourself off a cliff or something? I went, um, downhill from there ;-)
Oct 26, 2008. 9:58 PMKryptonite says:
Rhetorical question. Oh well, I'm not complaining. And where's those lifesavers!?!
Oct 20, 2008. 4:00 PMGoodhart says:
So, I have forgotten if I asked this already I had wanted to, but now can't find the post, so maybe I forgot but these instructables should be on individual projects and not a conglomeration of small ones? Or doesn't it matter?
Oct 24, 2008. 11:45 AMinkstainedheart says:
I think so long as the tips/steps are somehow related, it should be okay. I mean, who's going to deny steps on how to save money?
Oct 17, 2008. 7:50 AMinkstainedheart says:
Just check out what people did during WWII. Recycling glass and plastic for cash, growing "victory" gardens for extra food/spices. A lot of people already using carpool systems or are looking at alternate transportation methods.
Oct 23, 2008. 11:11 PMmunineye says:
I have to agree here. There are plenty of older books on how to live frugally in tough times, or hey, go talk to a family member who lived back then and knew how to save money. They'll appreciate the company and interest, and you'll get useful suggestions. I have to say victory gardens are probably my favorite of the ideas, but then I'm a green thumb anyway.

. Bring some .223 hollow points with ya. I've got plenty of FMJs for plinking, but don't usually keep hunting rounds. A couple of boxes of 9mm wouldn't hurt.

I can't ever seem to find real M-80's nowadays, so I usually make my own.

Ever done it with an old crank-telephone generator?
Oct 17, 2008. 9:37 PMNachoMahma says:
. I helped a guy put one together, but didn't feel it was worth getting caught even being in the same county when he used it. I may be crazy, but I ain't stoopid.
. The only time I used M-80's was to blast a few carp out of a strip mine pit about 30 years ago. Dumb kid having fun blowing stuff up.
. It is great fun to shoot the .223 under a turtle on top of the water and watch him do flips. Did that a few times at my buddy's pond and then we decided the concussion probably wasn't good for them.

. I really don't see it getting that bad. Things will be difficult for a while, but I don't see a catastrophe on the horizon. . Unless things get real bad, I'm in pretty good shape. My house and cars are paid for, so they can't be repossessed. I pay off my credit cards every month, so I don't have to worry about high interest rates (I just use them so I don't have to carry around cash). . If it gets bad enough that I can't afford natural gas, I live in the middle of several million acres of forest and the Winters don't usually get that cold. It would be difficult to get by without electricity, but I think I could manage. . As long as I have water and food (looks like I have W'burg and tech-king to help with any hunting/fishing required and there's plenty of game around here), I should be OK.
Oct 17, 2008. 6:37 PMLithium Rain says:
I'm with you on this one-as long as there's water and enough food of any type not to starve, I'm good.
Oct 17, 2008. 2:49 PMBig Bwana says:
Global Economic meltdown, Money is only printed paper, just like the stuff that comes out of a laser printer only it's more colourful... What's the worry ?? If I dropped you in the arctic during winter and said I'll pick you up in a three days and I took your coat and gave you a $1,000,000 in paper bills and a Bic lighter how much money would you come home with ?? The earth is not going to split in two the sky won't turn green and cats won't fall from the sky..... Sure people might have to learn how to grow some food (( but this is only because corporate greed hasn't been paying the farmers for years )) and people might have to learn how to trade and barter (( honestly it's a very simple system, even walmart will do this if you ask the right manager )) You want to see a meltdown go look at Zimbabwe economy inflation is in the milllions of percent, there money is worth less then charmin pound for pound... but it's not the end of the world..............
Oct 17, 2008. 6:17 PMBig Bwana says:
<> well it's high in fiber and low in fat ... but your right you can't eat it the ink and metal strip is probably toxic and that much fiber in your diet well you know ... I'm just trying to put it in perspective for people, after all it's only paper, but for some reason people will kill each other over it, and I've asked that question to other people and I never get an answer ((( I'd burn upto $333,333 dollars a day if need be ))) you can't put a price on life and money is nothing more then a tool..... And yes infrastructure will slowly start to fail, and I can see problems in large urban centers, however it won't be from no food being delivered, it will be from a shift in the type of foods being delivered, people will have to switch from an expensive largely animal protein type diet to cheaper mainly grain derived carbohydrate type diet, and right now on a good day most people don't even eat oatmeal porridge even for breakfast... It will be hard for most people... The government could step into this and regulate prices because if you look at $9 box of cereal like corn pops and then look at the commodities pricing you can see the farmers are only working for a fraction of a percent of the final cost of food and the government could actually insure two things, one the farmers are paid which will increase productivity, and two people can afford to eat, which will also increase productivity... If you look at most farmers they are getting older and older the average age is what 50 something, there is very few new people entering that industry because right now it's not a financially attractive industry, monsato has to get there cut for the hybrid corn, bayer has to get there cut for the chemicals you have to spray to get the yields, Exxon is getting there cut from both the fertilizers and fuels you use and John deer is collecting on the tractor, and the banks on the interest ... And with all this farmers can still feed North America right now.. The Government might have to regulate the selling of food products but Riots ... Nope... Also while there may not be any thing worth trading, if people got rid of there perfect lawns they honestly can grow enough food to feed themselves, and large masses of unemployed people can always trade labor, and skills there is thousands of skilled trades, even if they may not like this concept, I live in a farm based community and my neighbor grows enough food to feed about 5000 people for a year and he employs only a few people, and if times became real tough, similar to Africa , there would be more people working on the farm and less mechanization, oddly enough if you feed people they will stay and work you, don't even have to pay them..... It might be a real shock for people but it won't be the end of the world, ((( It has worked before in the past and he still has a few old bunk shacks for the crews that used to work for food and shelter )) And Zimbabwe's land reforms is the only reason there is food starvations you can't take large productive farms and split them up, and sell off the equipment and expect the same levels of production..... American healthcare well I can't speak about that as I live in Canada and I don't have to pay for health care, at all next year (( and it's only $44 a month right now or $88 for a family )) and I know you pay an arm and a leg if you break a finger down there, your government really needs to provide you free health care like most of the developed world already has.... (( after watching Sicko we can see just how good we have it up here, I goto the hospital and it costs me nothing and they don't load me in a taxi and ship me to a free hospital, it took the doctor less time to stitch my finger then it would take the taxi to show up <> ))

Win the lottery? Actually, I don't think there's much I can do. I'm already saving for a pension, but pension funds depend on share prices. I can't influence those. I have no savings, but I have a mortgage I can afford as long as we have at least one and a half jobs between us. Our jobs are reasonably safe as long as there are children in need of education (as long as I get through the impending school closure without a hitch).
