DIY Circular knitting needles

I teach a knitting class at a federal penitentiary; while I've been able to get a lot of yarn donated, we still have very few needles (the only ones the inmates can use are wooden circular needles). I've been trying to make some myself from dowels and weed eater cord, but they look like c$?&, and the cord keeps coming out. If anyone has any ideas on how to make some, I would really appreciate it!

That's only one listing among dozens. You can possibly discuss with a Chinese seller getting a 'set' all one size, once you've decided on which size best suits your students.

Good luck!

Too bad plastic circulars aren't allowed; I've a bunch I'd gladly donate - if someone paid the postage.

If you can't figure out a good way to make them, you can buy 15 sets of bamboo circular knitting needles for under $20 at Amazon.com. (Perhaps a cash donation could get you enough).

Not for nothing, but a pair of wooden sticks with high test fishing line strung across it makes for the next best thing when you don't have a shiv.

But, try drilling an angled hole at the end of the dowel and protuding out the side. Countersink the side hole opening. When you pass the cord through the hole, you can tie a knot on the end and recess the knot.
