And kiteman strikes again! The nice thing about solar stills is that they're sustainable. Iodine tablets and the such may work well and relatively cheaply, but they need a constant supply. The lifestraw seems promising, though, due to their long life.
But doesn't lifestraw only sustain a single individual "in the wild" as it were? Solar stills, on the other hand, can be scaled as large as need or materials require.
I'm pretty sure they have a family sized version. It's not as sustainable or cheap as solar stills, but still a good idea.
Lifestraw is definitely a Good Thing, but only good for 700 litres.

Although, 700 litres should easily sustain a person involved in building a solar still for long-term purification.
The family version is good for 18,000 liters. At a gallon a day per person (the normal recommendation for storm shelters, that will last a family of four for over three years.
They do make a family size filter and it's good for about 18,000 liters, however with that said it's not cheap the basic lifestraw is about $3.00 USD (( this is not affordable to most people in developing nations )) and it will filter about 700 Liters and that rating is assuming the water your running through it is fairly clean (( it won't even filter 7 liters of very turbid water )) The lifestraw specifications are also very misleading, the filter element is 15 microns this gives it a high flow rating so sucking is easy, however it will also allow Giardia lamblia bacteria to pass right though it, and due to Giardia's resistance to both Chlorine and Iodine you'll end up geting sick in areas which Giardia is present (( most of the world )) You need a filter that is 1 Micron in size or smaller, and with most straw designs this is not really all that practical...
