Exploding 9-volt Batteries?

I have always wondered if 2 9-volt batteries connected pos. to neg. and neg. to pos. will it explode? Look at the picture if you need help understanding what I mean.

! !! !!!! Awesome-I thought this was impossible! I'm going to hook up several 9v like that!

use like 20

180 volts ? That isn't really safe until you know what you are doing...

Fun with a few 9V batteries. (244 of them) :

YIKES!!!

or you had 3 generations of electricians in your family and have a high tolerance for shock.

Not me, for sure......I really HATE being shocked.....oddly enough, I took up electronics as a hobby :-)

nice

We must face our fears :-)

As one motivational speaker would say: fill the bath tub, pull the plug, fight the current LOL

In the swiss army we used crappy zinc carbon ones as hand-warmers in the winter. :)
Never exploded nor leaked...

But high-current ones like alkanine or rechargeables (Hell: Litium! If i think about that, it gives me shivers) are a bad idea because the pressure-build-up may actually blow it...

and btw dont do it with non alkaline or zinc carbon batteries. other types can explode. rechargeables are very likely to explode

nice, What does btw mean, I forgot.

by the way

i dont think connecting them like this would work, it would have to be a closed circuit for heat to build up. take 2 and connect the pos to neg on both

Actually, yes this does work. When I was younger, someone in my school did this. The batts defenently exploded, and there was a battery acid on the walls and there was a loud crack. I believe the batts have to be fresh though

I remember when I was really little I did this with two batteries. I then held them up and tried to "charge" the one on the bottom by letting the energy flow into it. Thank god they were both dead ;-)

wow, you are lucky.

. No. You've created a 45V battery. Measure the voltage between the two open terminal and see. . If you mean connecting the terminals of just two "transistor" batteries, they will discharge quickly and may get hot (leading to swelling), but shouldn't explode.

I think what thelonelysandwitch is asking is more if you take two 9V and connect them directly to each other (not a series like the illustration), would they explode? I believe the answer is, "No." They'll get hot, and the contents may very well leak out, but they won't go, "Boom."

Oh, duh (again). I should read more carefully when I'm posting late at night. What I wrote is exactly what NM had in his second paragraph. Pardon me...
Goodhart in reply to kelseymhDec 22, 2008. 6:50 PM
maybe it bears repeating ? :-)

great thanks.

ok, great
guyfrom7up says: Dec 21, 2008. 5:28 PM
you can still blow a battery up this way. These guys hooked up like over a hundred 9 volt batteries and drew arcs from the terminals, but then one of the batteries exploded! See it on youtube

awesome ! more than shocking people with a stack of CR2032s (the battery in computer mainbard) in a paper tube !

if the internal resistance of one battery is higher it'll get more power than it's fair share in the short circuit

with this higher power it'll heat even more and maybe enough to explode

seems unlikely in 2 battery setup but possible with more batteries
