Have photomultiplier, need help

Here's the deal:
I recently got a few boxes' worth of old electronic junk from my dad's friend Dan.
In this I found an RCA 931-A photomultipler tube.  (Datasheets available here and here)
What I wish to build with this is a scintillator detector.
Any and all shared knowledge about photomultipliers (as in tips, drivers, experience) would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for taking your time to read this.

. Never power up a high-gain PMT if there is ANY light present. I used to work on a NOx analyzer (NOx + O3 -> photon) and burned out the PMT when I accidentally powered it up with the case open. :(
