Hidden touch switch.

I'm new here and very new to the world of electronics. I have been looking all over the internet to find what I'm looking for and can only find the same to purchase. I really do not want to purchase, but build it myself and learn in the process.

Here's what I'm looking for :

I need to make a switch that can be hidden behind a 1mm painted steel plate. The switch needs to operate a 12volt solenoid basically the same as the ones used in cars for the automatic door lock. I need it to activate the solenoid when you touch a specific point on the steel plate.

The nearest i could find to this on the market is sold by autolok and called an invisible switch. Reason i mention this is that it can give you a better idea of what i need, in case my explanation is not good enough. Here's a link : http://www.autoloc.com/catalog/UltraTouch-Invisible-Switch-System/UltraTouch-Invisible-Switch-System/ULTRAT1/UltraTouch-Invisible-Switch-System-with-Sensor

Thanks in advance for any help and advice you can offer.

Just a quick late entry.....

The switch can be behind 3mm plastic if the metal, as mentioned above, complicates things too much.
