Hitchhikers guide to.. The Earth!

So here's the idea.
I've been thinking how cool it would be to do a collaboration and create a giant travel guide. But not just an ordinary travel guide, one written by all instructables members.
We have enough people on this site that we could get a pretty good start on it. I think the idea would spread fairly quickly.
For example, I would write a brief something or other about my state (North Carolina), and then a full length guide for Boone, the university town that I live in. I would include basic information like population, size, etc., and also where I like to eat, what kind of tourist attractions are here, why ASU beat Michigan, etc. Some one else could add to what I wrote, and someone else could add a guide for the Charlotte/Denver area, and so on. For another state/province someone would just add a new step, etc.
I realize it wouldn't be an Instructable, in the strict sense, but it would be helpful nonetheless. Not to mention we could have a lot of fun with it.

What do you all think?
What do the Instructables staff think about something like this? (In light of the fact that this is not a step by step guide to any one thing)

Let the discussion begin. =)

Mostly harmless

It's been done before.

The original is here, but is almost wholly text-based. It's fairly popular, but I suspect that's largely because the "BBC" label gets it through work filters.

It certainly suffered from a dearth of writers a few years ago - I've written nine articles for the main edited guide (rather than just personal-level entries), and four of them ended up featured on the front page.

The format is a lot less user-friendly than here.
Sounds a lot like wikitravel.

I had the same idea as you a couple years ago only to do some research and find that there are already a couple of similar sites.

But none of those are on instructables... ;)
You could definitely set up a theme group, and post an Instructable for your area! "How to Visit ... " or "Which museums are awesome in..." could be a lot of fun. I'd join, and add some local how-tos.
. But Ibles is not a travel site; it's a DIY site. If you can come up with something about setting up and running a travel site, THAT'S an iBle.

This is true... I don't know, it seemed like a good idea.
. It IS a good idea. I just don't think it's appropriate here. But this ain't my web site - if the powers-that-be like it ...

I would love to help you with Charlotte, since I'm 15 minutes outside of it, but I try to avoid it at all costs.
