How about a "What We're Up To" forum/page?

. Y'all have been making a lot of changes lately and not informing the community about what's going on. If you had a forum or page (replies wouldn't really be necessary) that said "Here's what we're working on right now" you could include a note saying "don't worry about it, we're doing some tweaking" or "if you have problems, let us know." This would also help the regulars help the confused so they don't have to bother you.

OK, I'll write some stuff up soon. One of the reasons we haven't done this before is this: many of the features we spend time developing are not geared towards the core community, and while you always have our ear, I don't want you to get frustrated and think we aren't listening to want you want. I fear that a discussion of our upcoming features might tend to revolve singularly around just this issue, and not only be unproductive, but lead to hard feelings. We have a balancing act that involves keeping existing users happy, bringing new people in to the party, and making money. Such a discussion would almost by definition only involve the existing users, and so my job in the discussion becomes representing the new users and the company's interests. These things are not at odds in some fundamental way, but they all do compete for very limited development time. However, we'll give it a shot. It seems pretty clear that the people mature enough to really want to be included in such a discussion will be able to understand some of the nuance of our development decisions. Plus, you'll probably have some good ideas.

. Then don't make it a discussion. :) Just something to announce new features and give warnings of items still being debugged. It needn't be a forum.
. Might be a good place to announce scheduled downtime, &c.

. I'm not suggesting that you make us privy to anything going on in your business, just the changes that affect how the site functions.

. If a forum/group is used, it would be a good place to get suggestions on how to implement/change features/UI. We may not come up with any good ideas, but it should give you a better idea of what we (think we) want.
Agreed.
What LR said! Your point about competing priorities, and the audience vs. stakeholders in those priorities, is well taken. It is important that we interested users not try to "hijack" the way you choose to set those priorities (while at the same time letting you know what we care about).
I have been elected (okay, self-appointed) to represent the community in pledging not to yell, bawl or whine (very much) about things and show our appreciation of your taking on extra work for us.
