How could I extract a USB port from a dead laptop?

I have a dead laptop lying around and I want to make a USB solar powered charger/9v charger for my iPod and phone. There's 2 USB ports in this specific laptop. Would there be a way to take them out and have them still be usable? It doesn't seem like it but possibly.

Before you dissect your laptop, do you know what the problem is with the laptop?

I wouldn't recommend disassembling a laptop for one part, especially when the laptop might be easily fixed. If you're not interested in fixing it, I would recommend selling it on ebay or craigslist (or or or). There are many people who are interested in using your zombified tech.

Then, use the profits, and purchase the 10 cent parts you are needing.

Dude...when my brother sold it to me the screen was hanging on by a VERY frayed wire. I don't care how easy it is to fix, he got a new laptop and so did I. I already took it apart and have the board with the ports on it. And to top it all off, he gave me to me for $7 in quarters.
If that's the case, then by all means... Dude?

But you might want to invest in a solder sucker if you don't already have one. They usually are pretty cheap, and I use mine all the time. You melt the solder on the component with an iron, and then use the sucker to remove all of the excess solder. Makes removing components a piece of cake.
As long as you don't bend or melt them up too badly trying to remove them from the board, you can re use them. Alternatively, if you're lucky, they will be on a small separate board which can be removed intact, and have new wired soldered on.
