I built a Super (ly fast) Computer, we named it HAL.

I am glad to announce, we have built a super computer. I'm serious, 8gb DDR2 ram, AMD Phenom 9600 Quad Core,500gb SATA hard drive, Dual ATI Radeon 4670 DDR3 512mb Graphics cards, Asus M3N78-VM AM2+ Motherboard. It's so fast, if i was chatting on yahoo, i can see what you are typing before you type it. If ANYONE takes this picture, i will know because the chances of someone with this same set up is pretty slim. Or at least give me credit and let me know.

Pictures, Well, now!

I spot 2 different motherboards. How do you do Crossfire with the two 4670's if neither have 2 PCIe X16 slots, or are you using a different motherboard?
Yerboogieman (author)  ben_k7 years ago
1 is built in, 1 is PCI express.
There is no such thing as a motherboard with an integrated  4670, and your motherboard has an integrated nVidia Geforce 8200...
With that motherboard I believe you could do hybrid SLI, if you had an nvidia card, but you can't SLI or Crossfire a HD 4670 and a GeForce 8200.

Can you... Play Frontlines: Fuel of war, browse Instructables, AND chat at the same time?...???
Yerboogieman (author)  ry259207 years ago
Lets put it this way, i can run Call of duty 5, 6 times, and Rainbow six, AND browse instructables.
Click on my name, and in the column to the left, I have all the details of my Gateway super computer. The only speed restriction I have is medium speed wireless internet...
Yerboogieman (author)  Arbitror7 years ago
Why gateway?
They make good desktop PCs. My computer was only $1500.
Eeew. No offense, but Gateway sux: too much bloatware. And $1500 is terrible.
Ya, never heard of bloatware? Software and stuff that you don't need or want? Not to mention Gateway changes a bunch of the OS's stuff, like a different control panel in XP. . . Either get a different manufacturer's computer or reformat to get rid of that icky memory-hogging bloatware.
My PC came stock with Vista Home Edition. But, I almost right away installed Vista Ultimate on my main partition, and Ubuntu on the second. So I never really "witnessed" the bloatware...
That's EXACTLY what you want to do. Bye-bye, bloatware, hello faster OS. . . Ubuntu pwns too; it runs WAY faster than Vista. I've only got 1GB of RAM, and Vista's just a big memory hog. Sorry if you like Vista, but I had plenty of issues with the original (before SP1) and it certainly has made a first impression on me. Fortunately, as far as Build 7000 (beta) and Build 7100 (RC) of Windows 7 go, speed has been vastly improved. You'll definitely want to buy it if you like Vista's interface and XP's speed.
Vista Ultimate runs faster than Ubuntu, with my 9GB of RAM. But, I am looking forward to Windows 7.

Only? Mine was only $500
I've seen others almost identical to mine priced at $3800.
Yes, but can it sing Daisy?
Yerboogieman (author)  Labot20017 years ago
In the clearest 7.1 surround sound.

no, POWERTHIRST Rawberry!

heres my system as i choose parts: amd phenom Ii x4 940 blac edition overclocked to 4 ghz asus m3n72d zotak geforce gts 250 amp (might get a second) corsair tx-750 ram is currently 4gb ocz gold xtc but is probably going to be come 6gb of ddr-1066
Win7Maniac6 years ago
Bah, nothing. Check this out, and I bet its cheaper than what you spent
This thing is way faster: ***12GB of DDR3*** and 1TB. They make 2TB now days, you probably want to go for that. And no offense, dude, but a supercomputer is with like 100 processors. That's how they make supercomputers now. Nice try, though, but the computers of today are way better than even the computers of 2007.

Only 500gb HD. Make it a super-super computer, Go for the 2terabyte.
Some super computers have more RAM than that, go for 2 petabytes of HD.
I was referring to the hard drive, not the RAM.
I know that, I was just saying that some supercomputers have more than 2 Terabytes of RAM.
gmjhowe7 years ago
Nice work, lets hope you got some good quality stuff (seagate HDD etc) What have you got running on it? (it better be 64bit, or your gonna get slapped :P ) One suggestion i have, you need a second 500gb drive, to set up as a mirror, so you can survive harddrive fail.
Yerboogieman (author)  gmjhowe7 years ago
Well, my brother won a vista disc on a microsoft website, and it wasn't 64 bit, but we are looking on how to change it, so it detects all of the ram. Western Digital hard drive.
Try OpenSUSE. Yea, I know Linux. Run and scream in fear of the command line.
Yerboogieman (author)  dla8887 years ago
Phshh, command line. Try FreeBSD.
Actually some people don't use Linux for fear of the command line.
Yerboogieman (author)  dla8887 years ago
I dunno, it makes a feel that you are actually doing something. It's nice.
unless you want to get illegal vista, you're stuck with it
It was probably OEM then, sorry, you're kinda screwed. Also if it is OEM it's stuck to that motherboard.
If its one of the top two versions, it should come with a 64bit disk, or you can send off i think. It has to be 64bit to detect all the ram.
How good is it at Crysis? and you should get a better cooler and OC it, maybe get 2 4890 (new) graphics card as well instead of the 4670's.
Also, Cable management? And what case are you using?
Yerboogieman (author)  imnotarealaccount7 years ago
I wanted it to look as generic as possible, although it looks nice.

Yerboogieman (author)  Yerboogieman7 years ago
Also, not a super-computer, the PS3 is a (very) tiny super-computer (has 8 cores) but most super-computers have a minimum of 3 cores (lets see XP handle that multi-threading.)
Minimum of 32* cores.
Yerboogieman (author)  imnotarealaccount7 years ago
Sorry i haven't gotten back, I Will not overclock it, i don't need to nor want to, also i risk the chance of burning out a perfectly good, perfectly fast running computer. Plus it would void the warranty.
Padlock7 years ago
I just bought a new computer for 5 times the price of yours. 8gb DDR3 Ram 3.06 GHz Intel quadcore processor ATI Radeon 4850 w/ 512mb memory Pretty similar? I'm defiantly having buyer's remorse now...
Yerboogieman (author)  Padlock7 years ago
Well i already had the OS and mine is all custom with a more trustworthy brand of processor.
Oh. Well mine's an iMac - wait! That's it. Apple makes it.
Yerboogieman (author)  Padlock7 years ago
Intel makes the processors. Up until 2002-03 Motorola made them.
Can it warp the fabric of space time, or at least play master chess?
Punkguyta7 years ago
Can I have your computer?? I will give you 1000 shiny semprons in exchange.
Oh yeah nvm, did anyone care to notice he doesn't even have a video card installed? Onboard video suxxors.
Yerboogieman (author)  Punkguyta7 years ago
No, I have TWO graphics cards.
Then why aren't they in the photos.
Yerboogieman (author)  Punkguyta7 years ago
I take it you do not read the yellow boxes huh? not very bright?
You just changed that, I know it. Either that or I missed the box yesterday because you make it so Fuc*kin small.

No it's been there for a long while.

i gotta ask what was the pricetag on this

And call of duty 4-5 with absolutely no twitching or anything. But this kid broke my really nice joystick a while back.
Sandisk1duo7 years ago
get a server motherboard, those things can run like 4 quad-cores, with 64GB of RAM
Goodhart7 years ago
Very nice....I'm still stuck at 2004 speeds and abilities ;-)

2002 took a dump, out came my laptop i use everyday.

I built a computer very similar to this one in January (even has blue RAM heatsinks as well), super fast at everything as well as a multitasking guru. I made sure to put Vista Ultimate 64-bit on it so I could get full use out of my RAM, first time ever dealing with vista and have had no issues other than the occasional search for 64-bit drivers which is easy to find online. I put mine in a completely clear case with lots of blue lights. I'm going to scrap the clear case though and completely custom build one for my needs, since it is plugged into my 46" TV via HDMI so I can sit on my couch and do whatever with a wireless keyboard/ mouse combo.
Yerboogieman (author)  sublime_407 years ago
Hmm, i went with the 32bit version before i knew the difference but it shows up in the system properties. We built a computer almost just like this a month or so ago, about the same setup you said.

Does it have minesweeper?
D: D: D: D: What happened to your face??
You mean my avatar? Got tired of FEED SPIDER. I went for my new favorite cute/scary image. Nothing beats a black loco roco with fangs and spiky hair.
I Love that Roco, I forget his name but his song is awesome.
lols, loco roco. I remember when I played that when the PSP first came out. Oddly addicting. I must say you have good taste in your avatars, my good sir.

Nice specs, but not quite a supercomputer...although it is a super computer!
Can you play NetHack on it?
