I'm up to something dastardly...

Does anyone here have experience with: -electric vehicles in general, -Prius-style hybrids -deep-cycle batteries -independent rear suspensions -repurposing "free" lithium-ion batteries -The heat output of half a ton of such batteries, and a cooling system that might be up to the job -electric dragsters -building a car from scratch (and I do mean scratch... starting with building the frame) -Using a large gasoline engine to power a generator, the output of which directly powers an electric motor, and any power left over going to the above-mentioned batteries -high performance electric motors -low-performance electric motors -Breaking, destroying, or otherwise rending any of the above components? On a budget?

Hmm, although it defeats the purpose of it being electric, the allure of a jet engine is powerful. Even though a solely jet-powered vehicle would be likely to light the mountain on fire.

I've got a golfcart electric motor, access to (a moderate amount of) free chrome-moly (airframe), and a lot of car and motorcycle spares. I'm considering an electric (or hybrid) bike (or trike). A motor strong enough for a dragster plus the batteries to power it would be REALLY heavy. Also, I'd go with a low-speed deisel to power the generator. Also a VW rearend (like Nacho said) would be ideal. I'm afraid that low budget may equal low quality on a project like this. If you find out otherwise, let me know! I also have a Subaru 4x4 that would make a great carriage for a similar project.

It's the batteries that are the real lead bricks (pun intended). It means less electronic arson if I don't have to arrange hundereds of lithium cells and circuitry to regulate them. I'm not really sure who to ask on generator tech, since I've never worked wtih them before. I'm thinking that maybe buying a rear-drive, front-engine car and attaching a generator straight to the engine, then doing a little frame fab so I've got the electroc motor twisting a driveshaft (with or without the transmission?) would give me the ability to control my speed using the gas pedal and all the gas engine tech I'm familiar with. Of course, that might be an epic failure.

. If you plan on going over about 10mph, I wouldn't suggest designing/building the frame and suspension. I suggest starting with a full-frame car (not a unibody) and modifying as needed.

The suspension is going to come from a donor car, but the frame will have to be light and strong. I feel I can get a better weight/strength ratio with a beefed up rock crawling buggy-style tube frame. Of course, I've never been on the seat end of several hundred lb-ft of torque from 0 rpm on up, so maybe I'm being optimistic.

Or it could bend both styles of frame into a pretzel...
. We used to modify old Volkswagon Beetle frames for dune buggies. We would shorten it up a little and add a roll cage. Might work for your application. . With some minor modifications, the Beetle transaxle can be "flipped over" for a midship engine arrangement. Not a drag strip duty tranny, but amazingly durable. . Remember, the frame has to flex a little to keep from breaking.
