Improvised Mortar and Pestle

i need to grind some kno3 but i dont have a mortar and pestle or a coffee grinder. is there any way to improvise using household items? by the way, the kno3 is pretty strong stuff, so it will take some force to grind it. any ideas?

You could pour a conrete block, and inset a bowl into it to contain th kno3. A ball-peen hammer applied to grind it should do the jod. But westfw is right, explosive experimentation is a dangerous place to take shortcuts. It'll still be there tomorrow, but your hands an eyesight might not. I'm not against this sort of project at all (and I have the scars to prove it!), but always err on the side of caution!

honestly, just get a mortar and pestle, I tried stuff with an improvised mortar and pestle and they just work like crap, just get one, they're like 5 bucks for a small one

A blender works pretty well on KNO3 (just don't mix it with any reducing agents before grinding!) Add about 1% magnesium carbonate (gymnastics, climbing, or weight-lifter "chalk") as an anti-caking agent and it'll work even better. I'd expect a food processor to do a good job as well.

KNO3 is also relatively non-poisonous and quite soluble, so it washes out easily as well, and you can use your "normal" cooking equipment.

Wrap it in a bag and pound it with a hammer. Squeeze lumps with pliers. Drop it in a spinning blender. Dissolve it in hot water, then leave it in wide plastic trays to crystallise, stirring the crystals as they form.
