... The wimmenfolk stayed inside knitting whilst the menz did the metal grinding? Son...I am disappoint. (In ALL of you!) :-P
My girlfriend said exactly the same thing!

Maybe the "wimmenfolk" didn't want to do metal grinding... she was also pretty distraught that they stayed at the workshop while we went to see the steam engine, though.

However, none* of the attendees over the age of 18 had fights with cardboard armour, though, so I think in a sense we all lose :)

except maybe Jayefuu
WHAT Only the children had cardboard armor fights?! I am EVEN MORE disappoint what is this i dont even
I have to admit the cardboard armour and weapons made quite a few bruises
What, three years on and you still ache?

How must poor Jayfuu feel? I still remember him disappearing under a hail of blows from a crowd of younglings!
Take that dissapointment right back! I won at cardboard armor fighting. Though all my weapons/armour were made by child slaves (ie stolen from kiddies).
Rules 1 and 2, Lira, 1 and 2. You'll be telling me you are twelve years old in a minute...
1 and 2? Aren't those the rules that say I can't talk about /b/? >confused<
caitlinsdad PKM7 years ago
My theory is her lil' sis hijacked her account.
I got a bit of a battering, but had no cardboard myself... L
gmjhowe (author)  PKM7 years ago
I save my cardboard weapons for playing with at home. That is why.
When's the next meet up?
The last couple of "meets" have been at Maker Faires, in Newcastle, and then Derby.
Dunno. We might have another one at some point. GMJhowe organised a meet near him in the same year.
Oh, nice! Looks like a lot of fun.
Oh, it was.

All those projects, almost everybody came away with at least one new skill each.
gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman7 years ago
Some of use came away with a severe longing for a laser cutter.
Kiteman gmjhowe7 years ago
I told you - it had wheels, it would tow.

(All we'd have to do is distract Steve for long enough to clear a path through the workshop to the crane to lower it to ground level...)
Jayefuu Kiteman7 years ago
No! Mine!
Kiteman Jayefuu7 years ago
We'd let you come along!

Hey, since you're awake, could you ask Lizzy if she's finished the patches?
Jayefuu Kiteman7 years ago
They're still on the CNC sewing machine I think. Will ask her later when she comes in for our orchard planning meeting :D
Kiteman Jayefuu7 years ago
An orchard? Where are you putting an orchard?
Jayefuu Kiteman7 years ago
The conifers by the front fence are coming down as is some of the pussy willow by Oliver. Going to have a soft fruit cage in the patch at the corner of the building by the gate and apples, plums, greenguages along the strip by the front fence and one in place of the big tree behind the skip. Hoping I'll be allowed bees on the roof when we get a new roof.
We actually carried it in. J and I are looking at moving it upstairs next week - it comes into pieces apparently. Steve
I'll put tracking on it, like securicor have L
We could pull the laser tube out of the back, strap it to somebody's back, and they could use the beam-guides like a neutron accelerator...
Except me. :-(
That's why I said almost everybody. You were the source of many of our new skills. Our Yoda, if you like.
See new avatar.... Steve
Mmmm, cuddly!
gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman7 years ago
Do or do not, there is no try.
>looks at pictures< >runs away in abject terror<
Oh yes?

Are you honestly saying you wouldn't have gone if you could?

Merely that I would have brought my mace.
(It took me a while to realise the you meant the kind of mace that comes in cans. I had a confusing mental image at first...)
Why? Either one would work! :D
By the way, you have your wish granted - you can hear my voice (though I am a tad excited).
>chokes on snack<

I don't mean to be unkind, but that's...higher than I expected.

I can run the gammut from Barry Whiteto Bugs Bunny.

You worry me sometimes.

. Sometimes?
Challenge! Challenge!

First Pandemonium, now this. It looked like fun. I wonder how many more gatherings you guys will have in the future.
The Halloween meetup is in the planning stages.
It would be a coup of sorts to get DJ over here..

It'd be even harder to get ME over there....I have troubles (it seems) just getting outside my state...
Trouble with the law again Goodhart? the coppers got you on the ankle bracelet?
Nope, I just can't get my wife to go anywhere....and she doesn't want me to go alone.....
PKM Goodhart7 years ago
There was a well-represented WAG (wives and girlfriends) contingent this weekend, who managed to defy stereotypes by staying in doing crochet while the guys went to look at steam engines :P (ducks)
lizzyastro PKM7 years ago
We were working on projects that required fine motor skills, manual dexterity and imagination, not brute force and then subbing it out to machines. :-p
I was mistaken, I thought you were actually using those sewing machines...

Rainbow_han did. I used the embroidery machine, but kept forgetting to change to the next colour etc. so ended up ignoring it most of the time. Kitewife did all her cutting prep so now she can do the machine sewing bits. Lizzy
(Kitewife says to tell you she got the job she told you about - starts September.)
That's good news - get her away from the Pimms drinkers :-) Wonder what the tipple of choice will be at the new school? Lizzy
It's Norfolk, so I'm going to guess cider.

Did you know that Norwich is the home of the country's first council estates?
Woo Hoo ! Fantastic. Steve
Kiteman lemonie7 years ago
Kitewife's machine never got switched on!
gmjhowe (author)  lizzyastro7 years ago
Hey! We used all those fancy skills to design what we were doing, then we subbed out the making to the machines, so we could sit back and enjoy.
PKM gmjhowe7 years ago
Sit back and enjoy? Some of us did things by hand- I had to rotate a wheel until the appropriate number came up on the screen to make the CNC make my parts.
gmjhowe (author)  PKM7 years ago
I think the trauma and stress from watching that chessboard be cut is what tired me out... Glad it turned out great in the end!
Kiteman gmjhowe7 years ago
I think Jayefuu had the most traumatic time, what with #2 Son and Jonnybo111 attacking him with their cardboard nunchucks at every opportunity...
PKM Kiteman7 years ago
If anyone has photographic or video evidence of that, it will outweigh all the lasering photos put together :)
Kiteman PKM7 years ago
You know, I think I do, but saved on the computer that Kitewife is currently using to prepare for an interview...
As for me, I still have the fine motor skills (I still do a lot of soldering of tiny parts) but my eyesight is being VERY uncooperative of late, not allowing me to see the tiny parts, the markings on them, nor the pins that I must solder.

They call getting older the "golden years" and I think that is because everything SEEMS heavier    ;-)
Goodhart PKM7 years ago
Mine wanted me to stay close because she gets lonely (I think she just wants to keep an eye on I would ever stray - HA!! One woman is enough....
who in their right mind would want   2?
That's got Lizzy sharpening the needles. May I suggest
That was a great weekend. Halloween sounds like a great idea.
It wouldn't matter, I'm in the USA.
That was entirely Lemonie's point. Its called irony.
PKM DJ Radio7 years ago
Pandemonium? Don't think I've heard of that- I'd expect a meeting of Instructablers (certain ones, at least) to be called Pundemonium, anyway.

Maybe with a little more attention to photo/video taking we could put together a video podcast sort of thing of the next one.  Watch this space!
caitlinsdad PKM7 years ago
ahem, and maybe we could have closed-caption subtitles for the pun-impaired. Then again, that might not be a good idea.
DJ Radio PKM7 years ago
It was a meeting of mostly knexers who are on both ibles and KI.
ll.137 years ago
Looks awesome! When's next years, I'd love to be able to get there for it. x]
gmjhowe (author)  ll.137 years ago
Well, we are having one later this year we think, perhaps a halloween party. If you set off walking now, you might make it.
Kiteman7 years ago

I have now posted the video of me opening my cards.

Blame Jayefuu.
Kiteman7 years ago
Here's one video...

... I may post another, slightly different one soon.

I just sent you a PM with a link to photos - feel free to use them.

Where was this?
At a heavily-guarded* secret location deep in the Grim North of England.

*There's a buzzer on the driveway.
Was it here by any chance?

It took me long hard hours, but finally, i discovered some evidence. I realised that on one of the pictures you were looking at your pint glass, but thats what you wanted us to think.
In fact you were actually giving the sign to the alien UFO's up in space, to come down and destroy me before I found the top secret location.
Just as i realised this, it happened. The UFO crashed straight through my roof, and landed in my dining room. But i was ready.
Two knex heavy cannons hand in hand, I faced them off. One made a leap for me, but I skillfully did a quadruple backflip and shot him with the first cannon. Puncturing his chest and spilling his slimy guts all over the carpet.
Then second one made a run for it, heading towards my front door. But he was too slow, and i was too quick. A loud thud was heard, then a crack, before he crumpled to the floor, helpless.
Even though he was down, the second alien was still alive. I held him hostage, threatened him with my TR18. He wouldnt talk. But after a few painful hours in my basement, he finally came through.
He gave me the co-ordinates, the co-ordinates of your top secret location, deep in the North of England. I had defeated the aliens, and best of all, I had deated evil...

So, that is how  found this picture of your location. =)
Er.... no....
Darn it. Al that work, for nothing =(
It was located just east of Mordor ;-)

We didn't say what Shire it was in...

PKM caitlinsdad7 years ago
Goodhart PKM7 years ago
ok, you all go there, and I will keep Galadriel Lothlorien company ;-)
canida7 years ago
Wow, that looks awesome! Wish I could have made it. I presume a flaming good time was had by all. ;)
gmjhowe (author)  canida7 years ago
Very much so!
Oy fire! Around here the temps have skirted on 100 o F ( 38 o C) with an actual "heat index" of around 109 o F (43 o C), which wouldn't be TOO bad if the humidity factor wasn't so stinking high.....(imagine doing work, or traveling in temps and humidity like a sauna).

Add a nearby fire, and I think I would just die.......but otherwise, it looks quite fun :-)
Suggested future events for UK'ers:

"Halloween." - A party meetup.

"Eyeprotection must be worn" - a collaboration to blow shit up in entertaining ways - compered by Lemonie ????

"blow fn cr@p up in entertaining ways" may be more appropriate, unless that was a newsworthy direct quote from lemonie.

Sounds like a great time by all. I do hope I can get to the Maker Faire in Queens NY (as I hope at least one or two other local Iblers will).
=SMART=7 years ago
woah woah woah i did not know about this. where was it held ?
gmjhowe (author)  =SMART=7 years ago

=SMART= gmjhowe7 years ago

gmjhowe (author)  =SMART=7 years ago
Well, the next one may be a bit more central, me and han might host it. Would that be a manageable journey?

Lol Lemonie looks like a diabolical villain out of a movie.
I do like fire and lasers and big machines etc...

"No, Mr. Acrylic! I expect you to die! Mwahahaha"
gmjhowe (author)  PKM7 years ago
Hahaha! Slicing those chess men clean up the middle.
Kiteman gmjhowe7 years ago
We are *definitely* going to try that project I suggested come Hallowe'en!
Seriously!!! I expected him to look fairly intelligent, but instead he looks a bit like me!
Indeed, he has mastered the look well and it works for him.

Family Kite are home!

A seriously grand weekend, and I learned the beginnings of a new skill, along with a very important fact:

TIG welders cause sunburn. Oweee!
Kiteman Kiteman7 years ago
Oh, and did anybody get photos of me actually welding or grinding?
gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman7 years ago
Yes, I managed to collect about 300 photos from various people on the first day. I will probably do a slideshow with Jay of all the good photos. Instead of these which are just what we threw together.
Kiteman gmjhowe7 years ago
Cool - I want to write up the barbecue, make Perry a collaborator, and it would be nice if I was actually in it...
gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman7 years ago
Hahaha! Slicing those chess men clean up the middle.
PKM Kiteman7 years ago
I should have a few, and hopefully some video as well, but Jake is probably your man for better photos.
Grinding metal with an angle grinder.

>face in palm.<
Yes I know exactly what you meen! I also have lots of nice photos at different stages as well let me know if you need any of them. Great fun meeting you all.
BAWWWW! I want to attend, but i have no way of getting there in a timely fashon.
Nearly 4 PM and everyone has gone home :-( What a fantastic weekend. Good company, good food, good beer. And we also worked on some projects ! Lets do it all again !!
gmjhowe (author)  steveastrouk7 years ago
How does a specific Electronics Meetup sound? Me and Han can host, middle of the country, so easy for people to travel, and we have somewhere we can use for free.
A great idea - except I've got all the tacke for that here too. ;-) Steve
gmjhowe (author)  steveastrouk7 years ago
It was more for finding a more central location, soldering and the such is a bit easier to set up anywhere.
lemonie gmjhowe7 years ago

Sounds interesting, am I right in thinking I could get a train to somewhere with something big and crooked?

gmjhowe (author)  lemonie7 years ago
Well, we are actually down the road a bit now! We moved after we got married. However, our new house, and the building are within walking distance.
lemonie gmjhowe7 years ago
Yea, let us know eh.

NachoMahma7 years ago
. Awesome. Totally awesome.
and that is just the batch of weed in back of that J guy...wait, I think you make tea with that. My invite must have been lost in the mail. *sigh* Epic rogues gallery.

Yep, it's a gallery all-right. (lost on the weed reference though)
