Instructables got me to University - A MASSIVE THANK YOU
Just before Christmas found a wonderful little thing called Industrial Design
Industrial design is said to be for people who like taking things apart, seeing how they work, improving them and redesigning them.
So I applied to study this course at 3 universities (Brunel, Loughborough, Bournemouth)
As with most creative courses you dont get an offer straight away, you go for an interview.
(this is where instructables comes in)
So i was gathering together my school work for a portfolio and it looked pretty normal and average, and i was searching for other stuff to take..... but then I thought "instructables!"
I printed out pictures of my projects and some information on the competitions i have won prizes in.
My first interview was with Bournemouth, i showed him my schoolwork, pretty normal stuff, but his face lit up when i showed him my instructables projects, He wanted to see more so he turned his computer on and i showed him my other projects and the site.... Needless to say he gave me an offer for a place right there and then !
Awesome !
Next up is Brunel... Now brunel is like the ivy leauge of design universities, Its the Oxford/Cambridge for creatives... Its very competitive
This was going to be much harder, whats more the interviews were in groups !
For this interview I printed out even more of my instructables work.
Now the interview, there were four other people in my group, we started by talking about design in general, i was surprised by how little the others knew, but anyway.
Next we showed our portfolios, i let the others go first because i wanted to know what i was up against. They all had the usual school work from the last two years, some better than others.
Then it was my turn, first i did the school work, the interviewer asked some questions bla de bla.
But then I dropped the 5 megaton Instructables bombshell.....
BOOM Projects, Designs, Sustainability, Ergonomics, Competitions, Books, Lifehacker/Gizmodo....
:D Two days later I got an email with the offer I had been waiting for.
--------------------------------
Instructables really hit the nail on the head, and got me into the best possible university.
I just wanted to say thanks again to all the instructables staff and founders for making such an amazing website, it has helped me in so many ways.
---------------------------------
However this is far from over, I still have to work insanely hard to achieve the high grades needed, I have 12 weeks left to go, I have been doing so for a while now and its pretty much killing me, this is why i have been unable to post many topics or instructables, i simply dont have the time.
Although when its all over i will have the longest holiday of my life, over 3 months ! so i will be able to do lots and lots.
Moral of this story ? Don't underestimate your talents and abilities :)
Wish me luck !
Hope you could read all that, Its dyslexia.. what can ya do ? lol

Steve
My plan is to put together my own portfolio, as a PDF of images and titles on my Kindle.
I also heard that Industrial design is a lot of hard work, is it mainly practical work?
My course, on the other hand, consisted of 5 full days of lectures and lab time.
We even had to spend Wednesday afternoons in the lab, a time traditionally left education-free for university sporting events.
It was quite a long bit of writing and i just hoped that it came out ok lol
and i usually have to go back an re do bits :)
Thanks though :D
Again congrats and btw, there's a chance I'll be over your direction in the summer, but don't know for sure yet, no more patting lords on the head though, westminster was a little tricky with jeans as is...
Yea if you do get over here we can definitely meet up, show you around london a bit haha that would be awesome !
Mhmm, I do like London, people aside, plus you lot have managed to make the pigeons disappear last I was over, where as belfast's teeming with them...
Why you want pigions ? Doves are much better, pigeons are flying rats
Good luck !
Steve
I'm an industrial design student too (argentina) and let me tell you, it's going to be one of the most tiring, frustrating but EXTREMELY rewarding experiences of your life. I'm about to start my 4th year and love what I do so much. I'm so glad more and more people are getting to know about this type of design, it's getting more specific and far separating from architecture with time.
So I wish you success in all you do and hope you get to sleep a little during these years (I sleep during winter and summer break haha, the rest of the year, up all night making stuff)!
Overpriced products don't necessarily have to do with their design and IKEA is an example = good design at an affordable price.
Btw what does your QR code say ? i dont have a scanner lol
it says...
"Frollard" hehe.
YOU KNOW WHATS EVEN BETTER???
You just gave me an answer to what I WANT TO DO!!!
Congrats....
Have fun being a student, you wast years of your life if you don't.
L
You were probably pretty nervous to show them anything with my comments on it. Hmmmm, that caitlinsdad chap is just.......
CONGRATULATIONS!
And thank you for posting this, and writing so clearly! The next time some blind, puling idiot posts a comment like "what's the point of all this stuff" (remember that from last year?) we have a wonderful response.
What's the point of Instructables? It lets you do what you want to do.
yea it took me a while to write it all out, i kept forgetting where i was in the story haha
Yup Instructables, make you a man :)
My only regret is that I didn't discover Instructables until I was already at university. My interviews went exactly the same way- the colleges that gave me obscenely difficult maths tests weren't interested, the college I ended up at started by asking me "So why do you enjoy coding?" and naturally steered away from "do you know all the maths in the world ever" to "do you have natural curiosity?".
You've done a ton of hard work, and it's great to see it pay off. Glad we were able to help give you a place to show your projects!
Being creative at school is good, but when they see you poor your self into creative endeavours outside of school/work, it really does alot to show how creative you are.
