I figure someone ought to just write one of those DIY electronics books: "Evil Mad Scientist Guide to Blinking Lights." It could start with your basic LED circuit (resistor + battery) and go on to transistors, 555s, bent digital logic, microcontrollers at "basic stamp", ardunio, and raw levels, 7-segment, 14-segement, and dot-matrix displays, multiplexing, charlieplexing, color mixing and fading, incandescents, neon bulbs, relays and triacs, and so on. All sorts of "pretty lights", just incidentally teaching some electronics theory on the way...

I'm sure publishers would gobble up a book like that.

Of course, there are already some books along those lines out there, but I don't think there's one focusing around LEDs. Here's a series which sounds very relevant:
