Just a safety issue but solder and flux fumes are poisenous and all soldering should be done in a well ventilated area. I don't have a fume hood so I always keep a fan blowing where I am working.

i forgot a couple of things....don't use too much solder, you don't want or need a big blob....also , do not disturb the connection until it has set up....a bright shiny connection is good....a matte, cristalized looking connection is not good....a 'cold' solder dose not promote good electrical connection or strength...........

usually you heat the work, not the solder.....
also when soldering components such as diodes,resisters caps, etc.....use a heat sink to avoid overheating...as tjk1939 says, keep the iron tip clean...also keep the work clean....and use the right solder...rosin core for electrical/electronics

If you want to keep the tip clean, heat up the thing you want to solder until it reaches the temperature for the solder to melt. Remove the tip, and then apply the solder to the heated area. It also makes the soldered thing look neater. Complete agreement with what tjk1939 said. Practice is very helpful. Happy soldering!

The key to soldering is a CLEAN tip. The pic is a poor example. Next is clean work. Use flux. Then proper heat. You will have to experiment a little as it depends on the size of your work. Practice practice practice
