You're actually mixing (up) "ballad meter" and "common meter". The latter, the form used in many hymns, is always strictly iambic; ballad meter is not be so strict, allowing for additional syllables and varying types of metrical feet Just start singing the Gilligan's Island theme, and you'll notice there are often more than three syllables to a foot, whereas Amazing Grace always has just two. This also explains why it's generally much easier to sing the strict CM hymns to the ballad tunes than the other way round.

One other, perhaps less obvious or critical difference -- ballad meter is less demanding in rhyme structure. Common meter typically follows the A-B-A-B scheme; ballads only require that second a fourth lines rhyme (X-A-X-A).

Four Things:

Add
"Id like to teach the World To Sing" to the list

When "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" is sung to "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" , the universally accepted practice is to retain the chorus of "God Rest Ye ..."

Finally, I knew about editing. I was modelling the use of comments.

There are two amazing Graces, I am pretty sure.

Now , please, add more songs.

You must really like Amazing Grace, since you've listed it twice.
Heh. Anyone else thinking of the relevant xkcd?
79, or 851?
788, actually.
Ohhh...
See my other comment re: being frustrated. :P
Ack, yes, that's a bad fit.
I'm getting frustrated because I can't figure out how to sing "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" to the tune of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen...the refrain at the end of the chorus in that song is getting me.
