MisterHouse home automation

"MisterHouse is an open source home automation program. It's fun, it's free, and it's entirely geeky. Written in Perl, it fires events based on time, web, socket, voice, and serial data. It currently runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2k/XP and on most Unix based platforms, including Linux and Mac OSX. It can talk, it can check your messages, control the lights, program your VCR, and what is best - it understands spoken commands. It can even track your car by interfacing to a TNC. And there are 600 users and 209 authors contributing to this project. Cool, eh?"

Perl, is that a scripting language? Does it need to be compiled? I can never find decent compilers without sacrificing my right arm and leg....*sigh*
Perl can be downloaded for free, and, yes, its a "scripting langauge"
Do you have a "favorite" and "safe" place to get Perl from?
XAMPP
.  It's an easy-install-then-start-playing web server with a lot of extras (including Perl). IIRC, they have a stripped-down version if you are short on disk space and/or RAM.
Install a web server to get Perl?

Lol...just download it from the official project site: Perl.org
Everybody needs a local web server ... it's just that most ppl don't realize it yet.
