My dad doesn't like some instructables.

He says that i shouldn't trust the recipes and some of the stuff on here because most of the recipes i make from here aren't that good like randofo's apple pie. :-(

The only recipes that worry me are questionable gunpowder and whisky recipes. Bad apple pie (probably) won't kill you.

My good apple pie: One pre-made crust (I like pillsbury) 1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 8 cups thinly sliced apples 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 5 lbs of plastic explosives Prepare the crust in your favorite tin. Then, mix the ingredients together, leaving the plastic explosives for last. Place them in the center of your pie, and bake at 400 degrees for an hour.

Earlier today, my wife had some show on, Oprah or something, and some expert said that he only eats efficiently, so he peels apples, and then eats only the peels and throws the rest away....it is too high in calories, he says, and most of the vitamins are in just under the peel....... o_O

Learning to treat recipes as more general guidelines is part of the fun in learning to really cook, and understand why you're doing what you're doing. And yes, that involves both trial and error. ;)

Clearly your dad has opted out of being a future pie-taster. Find a hungrier set of test subjects.

That's a concept that took me a while to really get - that a recipe isn't a God-given set of laws, it's a license to create! You can tinker with it. Sometimes it's even good when you do that. :D

And I agree, I can't imagine dissing the cook like that. Even if it goes bad, there's no reason to get mad...

When I first started, I was given a good rule of thumb: make things pretty much by the recipe the first time, but if something does not appeal to you, leave it out. Rule #2: until you are a practiced cook/baker: experiment with the cooking, follow the recipe with the baking (like cakes and pastries etc). A simple but wrong substitution can turn a cake into a brick. ;-)

Indeed ! And once a person gets to know a wide variety of spices and such, through experimentation, a whole plethora of tastes awaits them. :-)

Hint: don't sever to meat and potatoes only types. They are biased ;-)

Apples, maple syrup, crumbs, cinnamon, apple cider, lemon juice, combines into a great flavor. Although the peels are off, the apples still have a lot of flavor, especially if you have 2 or 3 kinds of apples, Washington has tons.

As you get older, you find you do not absorb vitamins as easily, so yes, we eat things because they are healthy, and the flavor is enhanced as the taste buds slowly go (of course, one must still have their teeth, to chew it well). Notwithstanding, I understand that some will have problems with the texture and constancy of anything with peels in it (not me, I like it with them in). :-)

I know people that leave the skin on kiwi fruit and eat it. More fiber or maybe they like having a hairball in their throat.

It came out fine for me. Everyone at Instructables HQ had a slice. No one seemed to complain. (Although, to be honest, my blueberry pie is better). Anyhow, next time, rather than sit back and criticize you for what you do and are interested in, perhaps your father should show some interest himself and help you. If he had done that in the first place, he wouldn't need to complain about the apples not being peeled. Heck, how old are you? I'm sure that I never even tried to make a pie for my parents at your age. If you ask me... actually... never mind.

He made everything for christmas and thanksgiving, i made the potatoes, pies and green bean casserole. he helps me with everything, including stuff from here, but i told him, i wanted to try the recipe, and make changes later, he said the pie was Really good, yet didn't like the peels getting caught in his teeth and throat, its weird. 16 in May, its one of those things, you want to do something this way, and next time, make changes to it. i have used this recipe again though, with peeled apples, i love the crumb top.
