thanks for thehelp, i think i will just stick to the desktop for the minute
Yes the ram is very small and If you like playing games such as the ones on facebook. Or just games in general They are very slow and you will be very disappointed. You would be better off spending the money for a kindle fire.

thanks, is a kindle fire like a laptop?
They are actually called a tablet. You can surf the net ,get apps, email and so on.All information is saved in a ( cloud so to speak ) instead of being stored on the computer which makes the tablet faster while surfing...

i knew about tablets, but you cant do all the same things as a computer, my friend has an ipad and i doubt its like a laptop, thats for the help though :)
for 200 euros its better to go for a tablet rather than a notebook
Yes Netbooks tend to top our at 2Gb of RAM. Pretty much as low as you can go for any Windows OS making them run slow. They also don't come with an optical drive but you can always get a USB DVD drive. If you need something small like a netbook then there will be tradeoffs. But if all you need to do is check email or write a paper then its perfect for that. Anything more and your pushing it.

all i use on the computer is minecraft, facebook, instructables and slender (its a video game). I dont download much stuff and have pretty good broadband and all, so would it still make much of a difference? Would a netbook compared to a full sized laptop that cost the same price have a noticible difference when it comes to speed, I dont tend to use dvds or cds much on the computer, usually just buy em' off Itunes.
Netbook won't support Minecraft. I've tried it on my Toshiba which has only 1Gb of RAM and i've tried it on my newer Elite Book which has 4Gb of RAM. The main problem is the GPU isn't up to the task.

If you want to play games then make sure you get a laptop with a graphic card and not one with the GPU built into the CPU.

whats gpu?
as far as i know you can play in the browser if its something to do with the dowloads......
Yes you can play it in the browser but if your Graphics Processing Unit (GPU, AKA Video Card) isn't fast enough to process the image data then you will have low frame rates. My older Netbook plays Minecraft at about 17 Frames a second (FPS) with all the video settings set for the lowest setting and fasts speed. Ideally you want no less then 30FPS to have a smooth playing game. My newer netbook only plays it at 24FPS. I have a 17" Core2Duo Laptop that also plays it at about 24FPS. But then it only has 4GB of RAM and is running Vista which is a resource hog. The GPU in it is only a mobile Nvidia 7300 which meets the minimum GPU requirements for playing the game. All that is playing with the default texture pack. I prefer playing with a 32x32 texture pack which puts a much larger strain on the GPU.

Just remember a lot of systems now have the GPU embedded with a CPU. These are base line GPUs and not meant for any heavy gaming beyond your basic facebook games and solitaire. Many have trouble keeping up with many facebook games. So you want to have a laptop that has a separate GPU from the CPU.

As far as I know their are alienware speed netbooks (for gaming) by toshibia, which my friend is saving his money for, at around 400 euro, what would the gpu be for that? Also what would the gpu be like for a full sized laptop at around 300 euro, the same sort of price as a netbook
Look them up. Look up the recommended system specs of the games you want to play and shoot for a system that is above that if you can afford it. If not them find one in your price range that gets as close as you can find. The recommendations will list several GPSs. If you have trouble deciphering where the GPU that your looking at falls in that list then do an internet search to GPU comparison charts. There are allot of them out there.
You *can* play Minecraft online on a basic netbook, but it is very, very slow (Conker-X has done it).

If you want to play minecraft, get a laptop. I don't know Alienware myself, but my eldest has decided to save up for one for online gaming.
As far as gaming and graphics laptops go, Alienware is way overpriced. Just FYI. Your eldest might be better off getting a gaming laptop where you don't have to pay almost double for the branding (if you can convince a kid that the performance has nothing to do with the name on the box.).
