New life for an IR keyboard?

So i have an old Palm infrared keyboard that works with two AAA batteries and i was thinking, what's the easiest approach to use it with my Nexus 7?, somehow re-wire it to USB? Use an arduino as a bridge in some way? An IR sensor adapter for the nexus and some software i don't know? any suggestions, or someone wants to give it a try?

Oh BTW hi! i'm a noob on the forums but i love the site.

So i opened it, it has the 8-bit microcontroller and 17 pins i really don't know to much of electronics, i was hoping i could rewire the chip for a USB, using the original microcontroller, but i guess by the nature of the chip that has the purposse of using only an IR led that turns on and off i have to use the arduino as the microcontroller, what do you think?

The Arduino Uno Uses a separate chip on the board to do the serial to USB conversion. You won't be able to 're-wire' the chip to get USB functionality out of it. You will need a USB interface chip of some sort to interface with the keyboard. Either you use a separate USB interface chip or use the Arduino Uno.
The link below is a pretty involved project where a guy used an Arduino Uno to create his own custom keyboard. The process used will be similar to what you'll need to do to interface your keyboard with the arduino so the arduino will act as your USB host controller. There are many other projects out there that do similar things with keyboards interfaced with arduinos. So look for them and see how they did it to help you out with your project.
