Official Instructables UK Meet Up - October 30th 2010

Jayefuu and I are planning to run the second Instructables UK Meet Up.

We did not publicise the first meet up too much, as with it being the first one we wanted to take things easy. Now with a little more confidence, I think a forum topic inviting anyone interested to come along is perfectly suited.

We plan to have a electronics based meet up, but some of the attendees are planning to bring along other projects, so you would be more than welcome to bring along something you are currently working on, or a few projects you would like to show off!

The planned date for the meet up is Saturday the 30th October.
We will start off nice and early at 10am, and keep making through the afternoon, and into the evening, aiming to finish up around about 7pm. If you are turning up late, or leaving early, that's fine, we want to keep things fairly loose.

We are holding the event in my local town of Alfreton, Derbyshire.
Attached are a few maps showing alfreton, and also the Hall where we are hosting the meet up.
The name of the place we are using is New Life Church, street view of the church is attached also. (if you want further travel directions, or help with accommodation just comment or PM)

Anyone who is planning to come along, if you could comment below, or PM me. I need to get a good idea of numbers in order to plan accordingly!

We plan to arrange to provide lunch, and will make decisions about dinner depending on turn out (we may just order in some fish and chips). To help cover costs we are asking for £5 for the day, this will include the cost of lunch, drinks and other general costs.

Thanks to Lizzy, and Steve, we should have a few kits to play with also. Listing those here so people can think what they might do. If you want to put your name down for a specific kit, just leave a comment below.

AMPLIFIER PROJECT KIT (PACK OF 5)  - £13.98 (2.70ish each)
Reserved for Lemonie - VOICE CHANGER KIT RC - £10.52

I am still hoping to source some drawdio kits, but thats harder than it sounds in the UK!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Jake - gmjhowe

Thank you to everyone who came along to this years meet up! It was great to have a few new faces as well.

I have Kiteman's Pictures, and a video of the tank battle which I will post in a forum topic or slideshow soon.

Thanks to all who helped, I have published the costume.

Great day, thanks to all involved.
The costume impressed people a lot.

Glad it turned out so well. Now you have a new skill.

Don't forget the others that gain new textile-based skills as well...
Yes, Jayefuu brushed up his sewing machine skills, and thanks to Kitewife Gremlyn & PKM learned to knit. Also under Kitewife's guidance I successfully completed an illusion (shadow) knitting project. Today I have browsed the 'net and bookmarked some more patterns and projects.

I effectively turned a cloak into a long black dress, and the use of your machine was much appreciated. (need to write-up & publish)

It was a grand day - quote a few photos taken, I guess they'll get posted tomorrow / Monday.

I made my first vibrobot, first amplifier and first speaker from a dead hard drive.

Well done, Jake et al.

The Kites have arrived at the Premier Inn.

See you all around 10:00 tomorrow if you're not around the Inn.

(Signing off now - £5 an hour for the only wifi connection within range!!! )

i would like to come. i will bring some pictures of my projects and show and tell stuff. im coming from Banbury anyone else from around there?
gmjhowe (author)  frostymonster5 years ago
Hey, I know where most people are coming from, no one will be coming past you I am afraid.

Let me know if you are still planning to make it.
lemonie5 years ago

Will anyone be bringing a a sewing-machine?

Lizzy will.

How, the electronics kit requires a 9V battery, do I need to buy one?
And it does have speaker?

Hmm, that may be useful, I'll think.

Let me know what sort of stuff you want to sew as I will need to bring the right sundry supplies

For the evening, that is the same day, I need my costume done. Its maybe straight runs, but there will have to be some pleating in there. I need fabric-feathers on this:

tar and feather the bloke...wait

no feathers and little tar...

I wish I could go! But unfortunatly its a bit to far to drive...

gmjhowe (author)  oscarthompson5 years ago
Which county are you in? Next time we may be somewhere nearer to you!
Berkshire, England. Its about 2hrs each way to go to derby-shire unfortunately!

gmjhowe (author)  oscarthompson5 years ago
Well, we might be having one in Cambridge, which looks to be a little closer.

However, most people coming to this meet up are travelling just as far if not further than 2 hours!

Perhaps next time you can make it if you spot the topic far enough in advance. Most people booked hotels and such a few weeks ago.
Cambridge is a bit closer, I can probably make that!
I only spotted the topic a few days ago and couldn't organise hotels driving etc.

Thanks for the comment

gmjhowe (author)  oscarthompson5 years ago
Yeah, keep an eye out for future topics, If you subscribe to me, Jayefuu, and SteveAstroUK you should not miss anything in future!

(I also tend to back track older topics to find people previously interested.)

Planning to go to the makers faire at all?
I don't know about the maker faire in march the dates are a bit tricky to make hence it being on a Sunday then Monday. Also I am holding a big concert the weekend after and need time to set, So that remains to be seen.

But, I can hopefully make the next meet up..

Could I have a go at the VOICE CHANGER KIT RC - £10.52?

gmjhowe (author)  lemonie5 years ago
Sure, I have added your name to the list for that one.
dayornite5 years ago
Im up for coming count me in.
gmjhowe (author)  dayornite5 years ago
Ok, nice to have you on board!

£5 gets you your lunch and drinks throughout the day. We will have a few kits to purchase, so you may want some extra money for those (listed in the forum topic).

If you could bring any electronics kit you have, soldering iron etc. Not a big deal if you can not, but it does not hurt to ask!

If you have any other questions, leave me a comment or a PM.
PKM5 years ago
Hmm... Do four other people want amplifiers? :D

I'm assuming they are simple Chu Moy type op amp boards that will run off batteries. I could go for one or two, but buying five for myself seems a little bit excessive.
gmjhowe (author)  PKM5 years ago
Well, we have ordered all the kits listed. I know I can find use for one, I reckon they will easily be used up by people.

So go ahead and start planning your idea.

Can we have cardboard & duct-tape activities pleeeeeeze?
gmjhowe (author)  jonnybo1115 years ago
I work in a printworks, if you require lots of card, I will make it so.
but i would like cardboard
gmjhowe (author)  jonnybo1115 years ago
I have grabbed some Double Ply super high grade Corrugated Cardboard for you.

Convince the elders to make an oobleck pool

We're leaving for Blackpool tomorrow morning, UK time.

If I don't get online from Up North, I'll see you all next weekend.
Kiteman5 years ago
Counting down... Excited...
gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman5 years ago
Wait.. is that this weekend? I had completely forgotten..
Kiteman gmjhowe5 years ago
Next weekend, but we're going to Blackpool first.

With the in-laws...
lemonie5 years ago

Yes I will have to be off early, but I've some electronics to do. Has anyone got some "board" to spare?

Kitewife will be happy to run a session on illusion knitting, if people can bring a pair of 4mm knitting needles and two contrasting colours of double-knit wool.

She'll supply patterns - if you already know how to knit and purl, that'd be great, but she can teach people the basics as well.

I shall bring my knitting kit in that case, that is a really neat technique.
gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman5 years ago
Sounds interesting, that scarf is pretty awesome.
PKM5 years ago
Room and train travel booked! Here's hoping I get a working door handle.  I can bring the Arduino kit, a couple of meters (one banana, one portable DSO I'd quite like to learn how to use) and maybe a crappy horrible soldering kit.

On the kit side of things, I'd quite like a headphone amp for my iPod so if your source of kits do those, let me know and I'll take a look.
lemonie5 years ago

I'd be up for that.
I'm pretty-sure I'm committed in the evening though...

gmjhowe (author)  lemonie5 years ago
Thats cool, you would be more than welcome to leave early if you wanted to, it would be great to see you there!
lemonie gmjhowe5 years ago

Alfreton I can get to. It'll be good.

lizzyastro5 years ago
Looks like a lot of fun - again :-)

Steve, I and the kids are already booked into the Premier Inn a few miles away. Look forward to seeing you then.

As I am not a great electronics buff I shall bring our dinky little pumpkin carving tools and help the kids with those, as well as any other seasonal ideas that come to mind in the next 3 weeks.

Premier Inn at Mansfield?

We may be sharing a corridor...
gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman5 years ago
Heres hoping you get the door with the working lock and handle?
Kiteman gmjhowe5 years ago
Hah, that was a Travelodge, which is why we're staying in Premier Inn this time.
Soft circuitry is the in thing. See if the boys could create some blinking circuit LEDs to integrate with your sewing or crafts.
I have just ordered a class set of blinky led badges which should be adaptable for halloween
Kiteman5 years ago
As if we'd miss it.

Family Kite booked into the local Premier Inn already...

gmjhowe (author)  Kiteman5 years ago
Good times! Hopefully less of a trek for you this time.
but i would like cardboard
LOL, I picture you jumping up and down with your hand up when I read that!

jeff-o5 years ago
Shame, it's just a bit too far to bike or drive.
caitlinsdad5 years ago
Try to contact tehmuffinator or zachninme, ex-ibles interns who started olopede.com. Maybe they can send some electronics kits across the pond.
