Only AA, AAA, C, and D?
Can we only use the types of batteries listed in the Sanyo Eneloop Battery contest's description for the power source in our projects? My 9V clip flashlight technically uses a 9V, but it can also run on 2 AAs. Also, what about N's and the like?

You could use 7 or 8 of the 1.2 V batteries listed here, to get 8.4 or 9.6 V, respectively. Most things can tolerate that kind of variation in voltage. And if you were using a rechargeable 9 V battery, then you'd probably find it wasn't really 9 V anyway.
Finally, another contest that I can enter! I've had a project in the works for over a year now, but never got around to actually building it...it should run off of two AAs, or a 12V cigarette lighter.
. Going by the published rules, 9V batteries are out. I'd modify my entry to use AAs, but that's just me.
What about types of batteries? Can I use alkalines and Ni-Cads?
You get handy little AA holders that have 9V clip on the end, they're pretty convenient for projects that need a disconnecting battery pack...
Well, most the time, when entering the contest you submit your project to be used by the companies for advertising etc, and it wouldn't be much use if it doesn't work off their batteries.
