Portable cd player laser extraction?

Anyone know how to get the laser out of a portable CD player? A have access to an abundant supply f them, I figured I'd be able to make something cool if i was able to obtain the lasers...

ok, it might be fine, just make sure that you don't: 1) smash the diode, like by pulling really hard or with a hammer or such 2) shock the diode, where anti static products, usually big metal machinery are grounded, just check by something like a drill press, hook up one end of the continuity meter to the ground prong and the other to the metal, for me this works as an easy reliable ground. 3) over heat the diode, heat will kill it.

Ok, thanks
no problem, one last thing, use the soldering iron least as possible, if you can just gently wiggle it out, don't use a soldering iron, if you extract it and there's a glob of solder on it, just let it be.

OK

Erm, anyone?
if you were to extract it what would you use it for? It's not powerful enough for a burning laser diode. All you need to do is find it, turn up your soldering iron really high, where ESD products (mainly a wristband) and priefly desolder them. 1 second of really hgih heat is better than 5 seconds of lower heat.

I haven't figured out what I'm going to do with it. My iron is unadjustable, should I just let it heat up a lot?
how many watts is it?

Ummm, I don't know, I got it second hand and It doesn't have any ID markings n it, but I know it came from a wood burning kit.
