K'NEX Contest starting July 1, 2013

Check out the WINNERS!

Update: August 20, 2013
The winners have been announced, check them out here. Thanks again everyone for such amazing entries. We had 12 judges rack their brains over all the entries, the tallied results were very close - the sign of a very hard contest to judge. The technical merits of  the projects cannot be understated, all of the entries were original and very creative.
Great work, look for something like this to happen again next year!

Update: August 14, 2013
We've just wrapped up the K'NEX (and LEGO) contest(s), and I'm happy to say that you guys did not disappoint!
With such a diverse and technical array of projects, I have my work cut out for me to try and pick the finalists. I'd like to thank everyone who entered, and a special thanks to those who created more than one entry.

Before this contest started, running a K'NEX-themed contest was an unknown. The K'NEX community here has always been a strong and independent, and I didn't want to engage with you and run a contest if I couldn't serve your interests. There was some contention about hosting a contest that may (probably would) involve a fair amount of weaponry. While this is a valid concern I feel like that is part of the fabric that makes the community here so great. It was important for me to have a mix of projects that covered all areas of K'NEX. I am proud to say that the majority of the weapons that were entered were well photographed and professionally presented.

I'm looking forward to making this an annual thing for you, but could use your feedback to make it even better next time! If you have any feedback on what you'd like to see differently please feel free to leave a comment below, or send me a PM.

I'm going to hide out for the next few days and pour over the entries to try and nit-pick all 200 entries into just 18 finalists. Thank you, everyone, for making this contest such a success.

Thanks for the contest Mike! Loved the whole thing! Hope to see another contest like this soon.
There could also be an actual trophy made out of k'nex... Just an idea...
Now that's when you got the idea of a knex trophy
Haha yep!
Thank you for putting the contest on! I honestly think that it helped rejuvenate the community and push our means to build new and creative builds! Can't wait to do it again!
Ditto. =D

You can enter in knex guns!! Wow, Hmm, Defiantly going to give it a go.
Sounds fun!
knexsniper13 years ago
This contest is not limited to any specific category right?? Like guns, ball machines, etc?? It can be anything?? Also, how many winners??
Also for ball machines?
hunter9993 years ago
Sounds good to me!
Johnhall143 years ago
Sounds interesting,I'll be back from a trip on the day when this starts =D You might want to separate the contest into 2 or so categories as others were saying.
Sorunome3 years ago
we get knex as a price? awesome, i'll so join!!!!!!!!!! a month and a half should be enough.
when are the topics announced?
JonnyBGood3 years ago
I thought some more on the category section of this contest. I think that it should be split into two categories: guns and everything but guns. I think this worked pretty well in your last contest so why mess with it. As for the grand prize a 3-d printer is still what I'm after. I could print my own knex pieces with it!

I'm also okay with any topic really, almost anything can be built with knex!
maybe each runner up prize could be of the nature of the category (see Ben_the_Builder 's comment in regard to the category idea). Maybe a model set for the models category, an airsoft gun for the weaponry category, and so on.
mikeasaurus (author) 3 years ago
Great suggestions, please keep them coming!

There's been a small delay in getting this moving, but we're still working behind the scenes to launch this. Your ideas and comments will impact how this contest gets delivered, so please leave a comment about your ideas!
split it into categories maybe? have one category for ball machines, one for knex guns, one for knex models etc etc, and at the end, we all vote on an overall winner out of the whole thing and the tops out of the other categories become the runner ups?
like the boss builder said, is there a limit to how many instructables are entered
didexo3 years ago
I think sense Knex guns and ball machine are the most popular here, those should be the two themes.
How many instructables can I enter ( I would like to enter three), and is there a set start date yet?
I have one quick question. Do the things we enter have to be full instructables? Because I have a gun that I built (that I am not going to post until after the contest goes live) and I would like to take it apart. Do I need to make a full 'ible for it?
well whatever this turns out to be i'll try my best at it i only have abut 1500 pkeces though : S
JonnyBGood3 years ago
So... has this been forgotten or are you waiting for more ideas? I've been stockpiling my ideas so when do I unload?
mikeasaurus (author)  JonnyBGood3 years ago
I'm in talks with the K'NEX mothership right now, we're sorting out how to best execute this contest so that it satisfies their lawyers and our readers. I hop eto have this launch in the next 30-40 days. Hang onto your awesome K'NEX creations until this goes live!
Does this mean that we should not post things we might want in the contest until after the contest goes live? Is there going to be a date limit?
There will be a date limit, so hold off just a little longer. I'll make another announcement here soon!
Awe, thats too bad. =( I'll keep in touch for your announcement, and thanks for all the work your putting into this. =D
Alright, will do. I spread the word around so everyone else can get ready. (Did a little Paul Revere.) =)

I'd say anywhere between 2 weeks to 2 months is more than long enough. Also, I don't think it would be right to have an all-in-one contest for knex, but rather divide it into categories and subcategories. The main 2 categories would obviously be projects and guns. I'm not that familiar with non-gun projects so I wouldn't really be able to sub-categorize that well, but guns I think should be divided into models, replicas (The difference being that models don't shoot, replicas do) and innovators (New concepts, new designs, new mechanisms etc.). I think each category should be judged separately and as for prizes and winners and such, I have no clue what-so-ever.
I am glad you looked into this. I wanted to hear your opinion on this idea... =D
CODawesome3 years ago
there shud be a top 5 or top 10 winners, which are judged by 5 people to make it fair. i will now leave y'all to choose
I think a contest with knex pieces as prizes and you must enter a car or veichle that has certain features such as on board weapons or atrillery. As knex pieces are relativly cheap, you could offer 10 mini piles of knex as a main prize and 5 smaller piles of knex as a runner up prize. As prizes that are real might be a problem , you could ask the winners to PM the winners zip code or postal code to recieve their prize . Entrys can also be entered by posting pictures with their coment. Here is a website which you can buy cheap parts for the contest. K'NEX shop UK - Classic K'NEX parts . Sorry i cant make a link for this website but if you google it, it is at the top and it is a great website .

I have never participated in a contest before. So I don't think my advice would be best.I suggest having at least one of the prizes being k'nex parts. Maybe a gift card for k'nex.com. K'nex.com also sells parts of any kind:micro, original k'nex parts, bricks, instructions etc.........
For the theme I think it should be anything having to do with k'nex.
Knex.X3 years ago
Well, it would be nice to keep the contest on a holiday, plenty of k'nexers
still need to go to school, in summer holiday though, many people would be abroad.
To get alot of attention, I think much advertising in people's i'bles (like the Red Book of Westmarch did), a neat price and many veterans promoting this would work out.
I agree with shadowman39, different categories with different durations are a must.
Think about 3 months for ball machines and 1 month for guns and all the other stuff.

For a prize, I'd think of a decent camera or a certain amount of money to spend on k'nex.
For winners, I'd recommended this:
10 entries: choose 3 from the 10 and then a final round
20 entries: choose 6 from the 20 and then a semi final and a final round.
30 entries+: choose 10 from the 30 and then a quarter final, semi final and final round.
Hope this will help you out. If someone's got any questions. Feel
free to ask them!
Well, many people like guns and they don’t need much time to build them. If it’s allowed to enter ball machines (I hope so :D) or other more time-needing projects, than I think the duration of the contest should be at least 2 months. It’s impossible to make a good, big ball machine in less than 2 months. If only guns can be entered, than I’d suggest about 4-5 weeks. Also, don’t forget almost all knexers are still young and have school, so there must be enough time to plan it all.

For the prizes, I think most knexers are still very happy with a new camera. Very useful to film later projects. 10 entries, 1 winner and 1 runner -up. 20 entries, 1 winner 2 runner-ups. 30 entries, 1 winner and 3 runner-ups, etc. Just like Tornado said.

I hope this answer will help and I’m looking forward to the contest!

If you want to get more entries, then I think it would be a good idea to have categories and a winner (or two) from each category. Some of the categories could be weapons, ball machines, and mechanisms. This would basically be a general Knex contest where anything built with Knex can be entered, but, when judging, guns wouldn't have to be compared to ball machines. If you decide to make the contest more specific, I would choose for the theme to be mechanisms/useful machines.

As for the questions, I agree with Knextreme and Tornado on prizes, contest duration, and winners, so I won't bother typing what they have said already. :-P

Also, is the link above (about the contest with mild success) supposed to lead to this contest? I went on the gun contest and was wondering why there wasn't much interest, since there were lots of entries.

I'm looking forward to this contest! :-)

If It'll start in mid-june i could participate - and I'd love to :D

The hardest thing about a knex contest is that there are so many individual areas. Although a large part of the community seems to like guns, I know myself and other ball machine builders dont really find such an appeal in guns and I'm sure they feel the same way. So it would either have to be general contest (much harder to judge) or some individual contest, that is Ball machines, guns.

What I think i=would be cool is a Kinetic model contest. This doesnt involve ball machines or guns but rather a machine showcasing kinetic principles: gearing, cranks, levers) to achieve something. THis could open up to stuff like fairground rides, or more practical stuff like Knextreme suggested.

As for your questions:

Duration: I'd say around 2 months. I know a lot of knexers also have school and sport and such so this allows a bit of flexibility.

Prizes: Cameras are a great idea! But you could also include tripods and maybe even video editing software? IF this is an international contest are you still willing to send cameras and stuff overseas? (say australia :D )

Winners: 10 entries: 1 winner, 1 runner up. 20 entries: 1 winner 2 runner ups, etc.

Theme: Like I said above, kinetic models would be cool. The judging should be based on the entries use of kinetic principles and how well it does its purpose.

Thats my thoughts. :)
Duration of contest: I agree with KneXtreme, 4 to 8 weeks is probably the correct length.

Prize: Again, I agree with KneXtreme, a camera would be awesome.

How many winners: 10 entries (into the contest): 1 winner, 20 entries: 1 winner and one runner up, 30 entries: 2 winners and one runner up, and so on.

Events/contest: I honestly think that it should be a K'NEX gun contest, solely for K'NEX guns in, other words. I have yet to see a contest of that type. Weather it should be a concept contest or a model contest I'm not quite sure. I have never been good at either catagory, but I would prefer that 'ibles pics one gun, and requires all entries to be of that particular gun. But then again, that might deter entries, as it may be a gun that is "too hard." But a model contest has my vote.
O.K. yes, I did post this...just makin' sure.
I think that a knex weapons contest would be pretty cool.
I'm glad you agree. I do too...XD

Wow a contest for knex! I don't really know where to start... but if I had to a duration of six to eight weeks would be awesome for my schedule. It would allow me to add at least another three projects to this site at least.
As far as the subject of what we are making out of knex, I really don't have a preference.... Anything is welcome, because it can be built out of knex.
For prizes, another attempt at a 3d printer or a camera would be greatly appreciated!
I'll be watching and waiting!!

Buy them Lego!
legos ok but i feel limited with it- plus i only have like 4000 legos cant do much with that... i do on the other hand have about 12000 knex
+1 for LEGO

Duration of contest: I think that a good K'nex contest should at least last 4 to 8 weeks because some people might not be in the middle of building anything at the time when they see the contest posted. I don't know about other people but with me, between school and sports it takes me a little bit to build and post my project.

Prizes:  I'm sure that some people on this site wouldn't mind upgrading to a better camera. I think that any of the Sony Cyber-shots would do, particularly this one. Another idea for prizes is Ebay gift cards  because a lot of people like to buy their knex off of Ebay.

How many winners: I think that if there are 10 or less entries - 1 winner, 11 to 25 entries - 1 winner w/1 runner up, 26 to 50 entries - 1 winner w/3 runners ups, more than 50 entries - 3 winners w/at least 3 runners ups. Maybe there could be a special prize for something like the, "Biggest Entry" or something like that.

Theme: As to theme, I think that knex guns should have their own category since they seem to predominate most of the knex community. All other knex projects should probably stay together.

Events/contests: I would like to see some sort of contest in which people try to create complex contraptions, machines, or inventions to accomplish a simple task like; turning on a light switch, or cracking an egg, or putting tooth paste on your tooth brush. I think another spy contest would be cool to see. There's a couple of spy gadgets I would like to try to build out of knex.
Oh, a camera is a good idea - many K'NEXers are young, and can't afford a decent camera of their own (having spent all their allowance on colourful plastic sticks...*)

(* What? You thought I'd ignore the opportunity for a windup?)
Dude...my mom got my K'NEX at a garage sale. No spending money for me! Ha!
he,he, I new you were going to come up with something clever to say.

If it's a K'nex challenge do something k'nex related, like a box full of different pieces or a rare k'nex kit or something
