the /5 stars ratings are not really meaningful for purposes other than popularity, have other different ratings for difficuly, usefulness, show-off-ness etc

The only problem I can see is that many don't rate so the ratings are up-ed by friends, but this only goes for the ones that have only a few ratings

In fact, the rating algorithm takes this into account. The average you see reported includes both the direct ratings of the I'ble/topic/etc., and the global average of every rating of everything on the site. Items with few direct ratings cluster around the global average, rather than being pulled to one end or the other.

Heh...search "Forum Topics" for "rating"; it shows up at the bottom of the first page of results, or in the middle if you "sort by featured". I also cheated slightly -- I've scanned through the FAQ forum before, so I sort of knew it was there :-)
